Attract international visitors from potential, high-spending markets

According to the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism), in the first 6 months of 2024, the number of international visitors from all regions to our country exceeded the same period in 2019.

For the South Asian region, the potential market of India has grown dramatically, reaching 312% compared to before COVID-19. Indian tourists are expected to become a major tourism market in the world because this is the second most populous country in the world. For Vietnam, this is a market with a lot of room for development.

In the past 5 years, the growth rate of Indian visitors to Vietnam has been quite high, from 2015 - 2019, the average growth rate reached 26.7%, from 65,600 in 2015 to 169,000 in 2019. In 2022, Vietnam welcomed about 130,000 visitors from this market. In 2023, it was more than 392,000, an increase of 231% compared to 2019. There are direct flights between Vietnam and India, shortening travel time for visitors.

Many Indian tourists increasingly like to travel to Vietnam because of its safe tourism environment, beautiful landscapes, diverse and rich products, friendly people, attractive dishes... In addition to tourism, many Indians do not hesitate to spend money to book 5-star hotels in coastal cities of Vietnam such as: Quang Ninh, Da Nang, Phu Quoc to organize weddings...

There is a shortage of Indian chefs in our country, and they do not have much experience in serving. India is the birthplace of Buddhism, so they are often vegetarians and do not kill animals. Eating tubers on fasting days is also taboo, but only eating cereals and not eating meat or fish. Currently, this market has many requirements for MICE groups including wedding parties, filming, golfing... In which, wedding tourism is a very attractive segment. Travel agencies need to pay attention to building products suitable for each group of Indian customers such as: Customers traveling on package tours in groups; wealthy, urban families; customers traveling alone; female customers and high-end tourists, ensuring the best service provision...

According to the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the total spending of Indian tourists abroad is quite high. In 2018, it reached 21.3 billion USD and in 2019, it increased by 9.8% compared to 2018. It is forecasted that this spending level could reach 45 billion USD in 2025 and about 91 billion USD in 2030.

For people with average income, when traveling, Indian tourists usually spend about 150 - 200 USD/day/person (including domestic airfare to the destination country, 4-star hotel, attractions, tour guide and transportation). People with higher income usually spend from 200 - 250 USD/day/person to enjoy more convenient services.

According to research by experts, Indian tourists like to explore new destinations. They love shopping, participating in outdoor activities, visiting museums, cultural and historical sites. Besides their preference for staying in beautiful resorts, Indian tourists also like to spend money, eat, and party. Indians value family, so they often travel with family or groups of friends. They often use average services, often calculating and carefully considering their travel and dining options.

It can be seen that India is a source of potential visitors, a market that Vietnamese tourism needs to invest in attracting in the coming time through promotion and advertising.
