According to Quiver Quantitative, as of July 9, Instagram’s Threads had more than 100 million subscribers, making it the fastest app to reach 100 million users in history. The app launched on July 5 and quickly attracted 30 million subscribers in the first 24 hours. It then jumped to 50 million and 70 million in less than two days.
Threads surpasses 100 million subscribers in just 5 days after launch. |
Earlier this year, the record belonged to ChatGPT - an AI super chatbot launched in late November 2022 and reached 100 million users by the end of January, surpassing TikTok (9 months) and Instagram (2.5 years).
However, Threads still faces challenges in retaining users because the app lacks many features. For example, the new website interface only has a reading feature, does not support searching for posts, direct messages, hashtags, and does not have a Following panel.
According to Instagram head Adam Mosseri, the approach of Threads is different from Twitter, which focuses on news and current events. Threads will focus on positive interactions between people and lighter things.
Given the rapid growth of Threads, Twitter has threatened to sue Meta for stealing trade secrets. However, Meta has also asserted that the Threads development team does not include any former Twitter employees.
