The Indonesian team's attack did not perform well in the first two matches of the AFF Cup 2024 (ASEAN Cup). Against weak opponents, no striker of the archipelago team scored.
However, the Vietnamese team still has to pay special attention to Indonesia's attacking ability. The opponent did not have a sharp striker in the first 2 matches but they still scored 4 goals with remarkable common characteristics.
Indonesia scored three goals in the match against Laos from similar moves.
First of all, all four of Indonesia’s goals at the 2024 AFF Cup so far have come from defenders. Muhammad Ferrari has two, Kadek Arel has one and Asnawi Mangkualam has one. Two of them are centre-backs, while the third plays as a full-back.
In the match against Laos, Indonesia's main striker Rafael Struick had a total of 7 shots (2 on target). His partner Hokky Caraka only had 1 shot in the first half of the match. Indonesia's second most shot player in that match was... center back Arel.
The danger in Indonesia's attacks is set pieces. All four goals above originated from throw-ins or corner kicks, when the ball was brought into the messy area right in front of the goal.
This scenario has caused the Vietnamese national team and U23 team to struggle every time they faced Indonesia. Not only that, even strong Asian teams like Japan faced many difficulties when facing the team from the archipelago country at the Asian Cup and U23 Asia tournament.
Set pieces, if well-arranged and in large numbers in a match, can also become a dangerous attack. International football fans recently mentioned Arsenal as the "master" of this style of play. If the defending team does not prepare a specific countermeasure, they are certainly at a disadvantage because the attacking team only needs to create a messy situation to have a high chance of having an opportunity.
Coach Shin Tae-yong and his players have shown that despite not being as strong as the World Cup qualifying squad, Indonesia's young players at the 2024 AFF Cup still retain their "special moves". Set pieces are carefully practiced, combined with the goal-scoring instinct of the defenders, making them an effective scoring option for the team from the archipelago, at least against Myanmar and Laos.
Defending high balls and set pieces is the weakness of the Vietnamese team under coach Philippe Troussier. If Mr. Kim Sang-sik does not have a solution and a special way to deal with Indonesia's "tricks", the Vietnamese team may face difficulties.
