With the product "Trung Ly Traditional Rice Cake", Ms. Trang and Linh won Third Prize in the Final round of the Creative Women's Startup Competition organized by the Women's Union of Nui Thanh District in 2024.
Tam My sticky rice is a long-standing specialty of the Tam My Dong and Tam My Tay countryside (Nui Thanh district). The sticky rice grains are sticky and have a very distinctive aroma. This is a traditional Vietnamese cake, often made on the occasion of Lunar New Year and the Hung King's death anniversary (March 10th of the lunar calendar).
Implementing the idea of “Trung Ly Traditional Rice Cake” from Tam My glutinous rice, Ms. Trang and Ms. Linh built a production workshop, purchased a flour mill, a cake steamer and ingredients including sticky rice, shrimp, meat, and green beans. Then they went into the product manufacturing process.
According to Ms. Tran Thi To Trang, the process of producing banh giay is strictly implemented, ensuring food hygiene and safety standards.
In reality, the investment capital for Ms. Trang and Ms. Linh's rice cake production facility is not large, including fixed, working and reserve capital of only about 14 million VND, but the product brings quite a profit and is sustainable.
In a month, the facility produces about 5,000 cakes, earning a profit of 5 million VND, equivalent to a profit of 60 million VND/year. This is the basis for Ms. Trang and Ms. Linh to expand the production of banh giay from Tam My sticky rice to create a sustainable source of income for women in rural areas.
The difference of banh giay products from Tam My glutinous rice is that the facility uses local glutinous rice with clear origin, the cake does not use preservatives or colorants.
Currently, the product is being sold through online channels on Facebook, Zalo, and at Tam My Dong market. At the same time, it is distributed according to orders from cooking services in Nui Thanh district and neighboring areas.
Ms. Nguyen Thi My Hanh - President of the Women's Union of Tam My Dong commune said that the banh giay product from Tam My glutinous rice contributes to preserving and developing the beauty of Vietnamese culinary culture, providing consumers with quality products, creating jobs for women. The locality will support the building of the brand "Trang Ly Traditional Banh Giay" to become a prestigious brand, trace the origin... and register the local OCOP product.
Regarding the proposal in the coming time, Ms. Bui Thi Linh - co-owner of the "Trung Ly Traditional Rice Cake" facility said: "We are in dire need of financial support to purchase more equipment and machinery from the capital of the OCOP program, the creative startup program and other preferential capital sources to expand production. At the same time, we hope that women's associations at all levels will pay attention to promoting and expanding the consumption market.
