A 60-year-old man (Chuong My, Hanoi) has had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease since 2007. Every time the weather changes, he has difficulty breathing and feels hot and uncomfortable. During this humid season, his symptoms have become more severe and he has had to be hospitalized.
The increase in hospitalizations in recent days has been recorded in many hospitals in Hanoi.
A woman also took her two-year-old daughter to the hospital today due to pneumonia. She said the child is sensitive to the weather and often gets sick. For the past two days, the child has stopped breastfeeding, has a cough with phlegm, a runny nose, and has difficulty breathing, so she took her to the hospital.
According to Dr. Pham Chien Thang, Deputy Head of the Examination Department, Ha Dong General Hospital, the constantly changing weather, hot and humid, has caused the number of people suffering from respiratory diseases to increase. In the past two weeks, the number of examinations has increased by 20-30% compared to normal days, mainly respiratory diseases such as pneumonia, chronic lung disease, and respiratory diseases.
Dr. Nguyen Van Giang, Deputy Head of the Department of Respiratory and Lung Diseases, Ha Dong General Hospital, said that high humidity and dampness are favorable conditions for viruses, bacteria, molds, and parasites to develop. For patients with chronic lung disease, poor health combined with environmental factors increases the risk of secondary infections, stimulating the reappearance of acute lung disease.
"The department is treating a number of patients with complicated developments, the disease progressing rapidly, much more severe than before. In the morning, the patient may be normal, but in the afternoon, they have severe shortness of breath, possibly respiratory failure, " said Dr. Giang.

To prevent diseases during the humid season, according to doctors, each person needs to have solutions to maintain a clean living environment and improve the body's resistance. We should maintain a scientific lifestyle, sleep on time and get enough sleep, pay attention to daily exercise to expose to sunlight to improve resistance, fight against pathogens.
The elderly and children need to pay attention to a reasonable, scientific, balanced diet with full of necessary nutrients, micronutrients, and vitamins; eat cooked food and drink boiled water to avoid digestive diseases, and minimize eating raw or undercooked food.
When leaving the house, people should wear masks to prevent illness, wear enough clothes to adapt to the weather outside; always bring an umbrella or raincoat when going out to avoid getting cold from the rain.
In addition, we need to ensure food hygiene and safety in humid weather, do not eat spoiled or moldy food to avoid infection, keep dishes and chopsticks clean and free of mold.
Families use dehumidifiers to create dryness or turn on the air conditioner in dry mode to reduce humidity, maintaining air humidity at 40 - 60% is best. Clothes need to be dried thoroughly to avoid creating conditions for mold to grow.
On the other hand, floors and glass doors are places where water easily accumulates, causing dampness and slipperiness, making it dangerous to move around, so families need to wipe them regularly with a dry cloth. At the same time, limit opening the door so that humid air can enter the house.
