Education The staff work 42 weeks per academic year.
The working time for general education teachers during the school year is 42 weeks, of which: 37 weeks are dedicated to teaching educational content in the general education curriculum, including 35 weeks of actual teaching and 2 weeks of reserve time (for completing educational content in the general education curriculum and performing other professional tasks).
Three weeks are allocated for learning and professional development; two weeks are for preparing for the new school year and summarizing the school year.
The Ministry of Education and Training is drafting new regulations on working hours for general education teachers.
The Ministry of Education and Training explained that the regulation stipulating 35 weeks of teaching time for educational content in the general education program is to ensure compliance with the regulations in the 2018 General Education Program and the Ministry of Education and Training's guidance on the academic year timeframe.
Adding regulations regarding maternity leave coinciding with summer vacation.
The Department of Teachers and Educational Management Staff (Ministry of Education and Training) stated that the draft regulations regarding maternity leave (for female teachers) coinciding with summer vacation aim to protect teachers' rights and address any difficulties they have faced recently.
Specifically, teachers' leave time includes: annual summer vacation as stipulated in Government Decree No. 84 detailing some provisions of the Law on Education; and maternity leave as prescribed.
The draft also clarifies the maternity leave period for teachers: "In cases where a female teacher's maternity leave coincides with the annual summer vacation, and the remaining annual summer vacation (if any) is less than the annual leave stipulated in the Labor Code, the teacher may be granted additional days of leave to ensure that the total number of days of leave equals the number of annual leave days stipulated in the Labor Code."
In the case of male teachers being granted paternity leave when their wives give birth according to the regulations of the Social Insurance Law, during the leave period, the male teacher is entitled to teach the full prescribed number of teaching hours and is not required to make up for lost teaching time. However, if the male teacher's paternity leave coincides with the summer vacation, no compensatory leave is granted.
In addition, teachers' holidays and other days off are governed by the Labor Code. Based on the school year plan, the size, characteristics, and specific conditions of each school, the principal arranges teachers' leave time reasonably in accordance with regulations, ensuring the school year timeframe is maintained.
How many lessons does a teacher teach per week?
Based on the current staffing situation, the school's plan, and the teaching load for one school year, the principal assigns tasks to teachers with an average teaching load per week.
Specifically, primary school teachers have 23 teaching hours, lower secondary school teachers have 19 teaching hours, and upper secondary school teachers have 17 teaching hours.
Teachers at ethnic minority boarding primary schools have 21 teaching hours, teachers at ethnic minority boarding lower secondary schools have 17 teaching hours, teachers at ethnic minority boarding lower secondary schools have 17 teaching hours, and teachers at ethnic minority boarding upper secondary schools have 15 teaching hours.
In addition to teaching according to the prescribed teaching load as mentioned above, teachers in ethnic minority boarding schools and ethnic minority residential schools also participate in other tasks of the school, including managing students, tutoring and supplementing students, and organizing specific educational activities of the school as assigned by the principal to ensure the overall operation of the school.
Teachers in schools and classes for people with disabilities are allocated 21 lessons for primary school level and 17 lessons for lower secondary school level.
Teaching workload for principals and vice-principals.
The draft also stipulates the teaching load for principals and vice-principals. In addition to their leadership and management duties, principals and vice-principals of secondary schools and pre-university schools are required to teach a certain number of lessons within the curriculum to understand the content and objectives of the curriculum and the learning situation of students, thereby improving the effectiveness of their leadership and management.
The teaching load for a school principal per academic year is determined by multiplying 2 lessons per week by the number of weeks allocated for teaching.
The teaching load for a vice principal in one school year is calculated as 4 lessons/week multiplied by the number of weeks allocated for teaching.
Principals and vice-principals are not allowed to convert the reduced teaching load allowance for additional duties. When they have taught the full prescribed teaching load, the principals and vice-principals may apply the regulations when calculating overtime teaching hours (if any).
