15 year old girl with large ovarian tumor

Seeing her abdomen was abnormally enlarged and accompanied by pain, a 15-year-old girl (living in Hai Phong) was taken to the hospital by her family for examination. The results of the examination, ultrasound, and MRI showed that the girl's abdomen had a large twisted left ovarian cyst, and grade 1 dilation of the renal pelvis and ureters on both sides.

Recognizing this as a special case, the girl was only 15 years old but had a large, rare ovarian tumor. Doctors advised the family to have surgery to remove the tumor, preserve the ovary, and ensure the patient's reproductive function.

On the morning of December 10, after more than an hour, the surgical team successfully removed a giant twisted ovarian cyst measuring 15x20 cm. The patient's health has stabilized and he continues to be monitored and cared for at the hospital.

According to Dr. Pham Thi Mai Anh, Head of the Department of Endoscopic Surgery, Hai Phong Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, the tumor was large, containing fluid, hair, bone, and nails. The surgical team aspirated 1.5 liters of fluid to reduce the size of the tumor, then removed the remaining tumor. The girl's ovaries were preserved.

Ovarian teratomas usually appear in the 20-30 age group and are rare in children. The incidence is estimated at 2.6 cases/100,000 girls.

Ovarian tumors in girls are often difficult to detect in the early stages of formation or development, because the symptoms of the disease are silent and easily confused with other diseases, so it is difficult for the patient to detect it early.

Doctors recommend that regular general gynecological examinations are necessary for women, including girls, to promptly detect any abnormalities. When children show signs of pain in the lower abdomen or an unusually large abdomen, they should be taken to the doctor. If a tumor is detected, it is necessary to go to a medical facility with sufficient capacity for early and thorough treatment, thereby helping to preserve reproductive function and avoid the risk of malignant complications later.
