Construction of new line with 1,435mm gauge, design speed 160km/h
The Lao Cai - Hanoi - Hai Phong - Quang Ninh railway line is being studied and planned for all sections and stations on the line, with the starting point being Lao Cai station (from the point of connection with the Chinese railway), the ending point being Ha Long station (belonging to the Kep - Ha Long railway line) and sections passing through 10 provinces/cities (Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Phu Tho, Vinh Phuc, Hanoi, Bac Ninh, Hung Yen, Hai Duong, Hai Phong and Quang Ninh). The scope of the study is until 2030, with a vision to 2050.
According to the consultant, the East-West corridor has an extremely important position and role, being the gateway for trade with the world through major seaports in Hai Phong and Quang Ninh as well as international transport connections for rail and road traffic at Lao Cai border gate.
On the other hand, the short-term forecast demand volume of this route is estimated at 16 pairs/day and night for passenger trains, 7.28 million tons/year for cargo volume and 23.28 million tons/year for equivalent cargo volume (both passengers and cargo).
Therefore, the consultant proposed the planning orientation of a 1,435mm gauge line, electrified; single track in the short term and double track in the long term. The total length of the line is more than 441km, design speed Vmax = 160km/h.
On the route, there are about 56 large bridges with a length of 47.5km crossing large rivers such as the Red River, Lo River, Bach Dang River and running through expressway sections such as Hanoi - Lao Cai, Hanoi - Hai Phong, Hai Phong - Quang Ninh, through national highways and some provincial roads; There are 11 tunnels with a length of about 10km.
The consultant also proposed the route and station planning when passing through provinces and cities. In Lao Cai, the railway line starts from Lao Cai station of the Hanoi - Lao Cai railway line, follows the north bank of the Red River to the southeast, to Thai Nien commune (Bao Thang district) to locate the new Thai Nien station.
The route continues to the southeast, crossing the current railway and the Red River to enter Son Hai commune, then the route runs parallel to the right of the highway to the end of Lao Cai province through Son Ha commune (Bao Thang district) and Cam Con, Tan Thuong, Tan An communes of Van Ban district.
The total length of the route through Lao Cai province is about 62.5km. There are a total of 5 stations: Lao Cai, Bao Ha, Son Hai, Thai Nien, Cam Con.
In Hai Phong city, the total length of the railway is 73.06km (the main line down to Lach Huyen port is 47.48km long, the branch line down to Nam Do Son port is 13.47km long, the branch line down to Dinh Vu port is 5.27km long, the branch line connecting Quang Ninh province is 6.84km long). There are a total of 6 stations: Nam Hai Phong, Nam Dinh Vu, Dinh Vu, Lach Huyen port station, Nam Do Son station, Tan Vien station.
Specifically, from the border with Thanh Ha district (Hai Duong province) and An Lao district (Hai Phong city), the route goes to the southeast, crosses the exit of Hanoi - Hai Phong highway and National Highway 10, goes along the highway to the south to Tan Vien commune (An Lao district) to arrange Tan Vien station.
Leaving Tan Vien station, the route intersects with provincial road 362, goes close to and along the highway to the southeast, into Kien Thuy district. The route crosses provincial road 394, provincial road 363, provincial road 361, crosses Da Do river to Dai Dong commune and Minh Tan commune, Kien Thuy district, and locates Nam Hai Phong station.
From Nam Hai Phong station, it will connect to seaports. Accordingly, the route goes along the highway to the northeast, to Hai An district, through Trang Cat intersection, the route turns right to the east, following the right side of Tan Vu - Lach Huyen road, arranging Nam Dinh Vu station in Dong Hai ward, Hai An district.
From here, the route continues east, following the south of Tan Vu - Lach Huyen road through Cat Hai town (Cat Hai district), the route turns right towards Lach Huyen port. Lach Huyen port station is located at wharf area 3 to wharf area 6 in Lach Huyen port area.
From Nam Hai Phong station, there will be a branch line, turn right to go south, follow the left side of the planned coastal highway, cross provincial roads 402, 361; turn right to go southwest to near Van Uc river area, in Doan Xa commune area (Kien Thuy district), then turn left to go to Do Son port. Here, Nam Do Son station is located in Dai Hop commune area, Kien Thuy district.
From Nam Dinh Vu station, there is a branch route to Dinh Vu port, heading south along Tan Vu - Lach Huyen road, then turn left under Tan Vu - Lach Huyen road, go along provincial road 356 to Dong Hai ward, Hai An district, Dinh Vu station is located.
In Quang Ninh province, from Nam Hai Phong station, a branch will go north to connect to Ha Long station and connect to Cai Lan port. The railway line passing through Quang Ninh province has a total length of about 35.54km (newly built line 24.87km, current railway line 10.67km). There are a total of 5 stations: Ha Long, Cai Lan, Phong Hai, Quang Yen, Minh Khai.
Planning orientation for 41 stations along the route
The consultant proposed that there would be 41 stations along the entire route. Of these, 5 would be main train stations: Lao Cai, Yen Thuong, Nam Hai Phong, Ha Long and Cai Lan.
In which, Lao Cai station is the station for passenger and freight trains on the Lao Cai - Hanoi - Hai Phong route and the Lao Cai - Hanoi section; it is the international transit station with Hekou North station of China Railway.
Yen Thuong Station is a station for passenger and freight trains in the Yen Thuong - Lao Cai and Yen Thuong - Nam Hai Phong sections. In addition, Yen Thuong Station also functions as a train station in the Hanoi hub for northern routes such as Hanoi - Lang Son, Hanoi - Thai Nguyen, Hanoi - Ha Long - Cai Lan.
Nam Hai Phong station operates passenger and freight trains along the entire route like Lai Cai station, and at the same time, operates passenger and freight trains for the Hai Phong - Yen Thuong section and trains for the short section Nam Hai Phong - Ha Long - Cai Lan.
Ha Long station is the station for short-distance passenger trains from Ha Long to Hai Phong; Cai Lan station is the station for short-distance freight trains from Hai Phong to Cai Lan.
Along the entire route, there are 5 intermediate stations with passenger and cargo operations concentrated in provincial and city centers including: Yen Bai, Viet Tri, Vinh Phuc, Lac Dao, Hai Duong.
The port station serving loading and unloading for the ports includes 4 stations: Lach Huyen, Nam Do Son, Nam Dinh Vu, Dinh Vu port stations.
There are 27 train-passenger and freight stations serving nearby residents, including: Thai Nien (new), Son Ha, Cam Con, Bao Ha (new), Chau Que Thuong, Dong An, Tan Hop, Yen Hop, Y Can, Lenh Khanh, Ha Hoa, Thanh Ba, Phu Tho, Lap Thach, Binh Xuyen, Phuc Yen, Thach Loi, Bac Hong, Dong Anh, Trung Mau, Luong Tai, Binh Giang, Tu Ky, Tan Vien, Phong Hai, Quang Yen, Minh Khai.
According to the consultant, the new line will be responsible for transporting passengers in the East-West corridor, as well as the volume of freight transport to localities along the route, following a mixed passenger and freight model to organize transport. The existing railway with a gauge of 1,000mm will be responsible for transporting traditional bulk goods to localities along the route, organizing transport according to a specialized freight route model.
