Chinese food delivery giant Meituan said its new drone service, announced last week, will deliver food, drinks and other goods such as medical supplies to customers at the Great Wall.

This is the capital city of Beijing’s first drone delivery service, a technology that is rapidly developing across China. The industry has brought convenience to people living in both cities and hard-to-reach rural areas.

The drone flight route over the Great Wall stretched from the rooftop of a nearby hotel to a watchtower south of Badaling, home to the most visited section of the Great Wall.

"Thanks to drones, we can deliver cooling items and emergency supplies to tourists in just 5 minutes instead of 50 minutes on foot," said Yan Yan, public relations director of Meituan's drone business.

According to Meituan, the drone can fly in moderate wind and rain conditions and can carry up to 2.3 kg per flight.

The drone delivery fee is just 4 yuan, equivalent to Meituan's regular delivery fee. The service will accept orders from 10am to 4pm, after which the drones will be tasked with transporting the trash to recycling stations.

The drones still require human help, however. When an order is received, a Meituan employee picks up the goods from a nearby store and brings them to the hotel rooftop, where they are weighed and packaged. The operator then attaches the package to the drone, which flies autonomously to a watchtower, where another employee is waiting to pick up the goods.

The app user can then pick up their package from the staff at the watchtower.

Meituan completed its first drone delivery in the southern tech hub of Shenzhen in 2021. The company now operates more than 30 drone delivery routes in multiple cities, handling more than 300,000 orders, including in the financial hub of Shanghai.
