Coffee price today October 24, 2024: The market receives positive signals for production recovery |
Domestic coffee prices are gradually decreasing, approaching the 100,000 VND/kg mark, causing many farmers to worry as the peak harvest season approaches.
The market, in addition to being under pressure from the new crop supply in Vietnam, is also affected by the continued high USD and favorable rains in Brazil, signaling good news for the new harvest, contributing to "cooling down" the market. The USD rose to a new high in more than 2 months in the last trading session, due to expectations that the US Federal Reserve (Fed) will adjust the interest rate cut roadmap, while investors are waiting for the important event, the US presidential election.
Coffee farmers said the re-blooming of coffee flowers after the rains has signaled a positive sign for the recovery of production after a long drought. However, the recovery and supply outlook for the 2025/26 crop still need to be monitored due to the late arrival of rains.
Son La coffee enters the 2024 harvest season. Currently, Son La province has over 21,000 hectares of coffee with an estimated output of 35,000 - 45,000 tons of coffee beans/year, worth 4,500 - 5,000 billion VND. Due to the impact of the El Nino weather phenomenon, Son La's coffee output this year has decreased, but the price is good. The demand in the world market, especially in the EU, US, and Japan for high-quality Arabica coffee and specialty coffee is very high, always in a state of supply not meeting demand.
Dealers said overseas demand for Vietnamese coffee is declining as many countries have secured supplies from other sources, especially as the EU deforestation regulation is set to come into effect in late 2024, a delay from the original plan. The potential delay of the EU regulation has reduced the urgency for buyers to enter into new deals, further dampening the market.
