According to regulations from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, with the initial registration data announced yesterday afternoon (May 12), students and parents will have only one period to adjust their choices from May 15 to 21.
Mr. Vo Thien Cang, Head of the Examination and Quality Assurance Department of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, advised that to change their 10th-grade enrollment preferences, students should reassess their abilities accurately. They should also discuss and calculate with their families whether commuting to the school they initially chose would be convenient.
The most important criterion for registering for 10th grade is still the student's own academic ability.
The most important thing to improve your chances of admission is for students to accurately assess their academic abilities. Avoid situations where you apply to all three universities as your first choice or overestimate your abilities.
According to Mr. Cang, in addition to self-assessment, students and parents should refer to the cutoff scores from previous admissions cycles. It's necessary to refer to at least the last 2-3 years to analyze and determine accurately, avoiding the unfortunate situation of failing to get into all three desired programs.
However, the cutoff scores or quotas of the school in previous years are only one source of information for reference. This is because the cutoff score each year depends on many factors, such as the number of students registering for the exam, the number of students applying for their desired majors, the difficulty of the exam, and the overall ability of the students each year…
Meanwhile, teacher Vo Kim Bao, homeroom teacher of class 9 at Nguyen Du Secondary School (District 1), advises that if the student's previously registered preferences were already considered suitable to their abilities by the homeroom teacher, then parents should consider whether adjustments are necessary. Parents and students should only adjust their preferences if the students feel their academic level is not suitable for the school or if the commute from school to home is inconvenient.
"Careful consideration is necessary before making a decision. Don't panic and rush to adjust your choices to schools with lower competition rates just because you see high numbers of first-choice applications to your preferred high school. Such adjustments could inadvertently cause you to miss out on the opportunity to attend your favorite high school. The first-choice application figures are just one source of information for students and parents. The most important thing is to listen to your body accurately," teacher Kim Bao noted.
Ms. Tran Thuy An, Principal of Minh Duc Secondary School (District 1), analyzed that the competition ratio for each school, whether high or low, depends on objective factors such as whether the school has a large or small enrollment quota, and whether it has increased or decreased compared to the previous year. At the same time, Ms. An emphasized that if students see a school with few applicants and rush to adjust their choices, it is not optimal. She noted that the Department of Education only publishes the data once, and after that, no one knows how the choices have been adjusted.
Parents need to consult various sources of information and criteria when registering and adjusting their children's preferences.
Therefore, Ms. Thuy An affirmed that the most important criterion remains the students' own academic ability. At this time, all 9th-grade students have received their second-semester exam results and their overall grades for the entire 9th-grade school year. From these results, students can comprehensively assess their academic abilities in the three subjects they will be tested on. This is crucial information to consider when deciding whether or not to adjust their registered preferences.
Similarly, Mr. Nguyen Anh Tuan, Principal of Le Van Tam Secondary School (Binh Thanh District), also noted that although the competition ratio has decreased compared to last year, to confidently register for the first choice at a top-tier school, students still need to have consistently good academic performance, with an average subject score of 8.5 or higher. If they are not truly confident and intend to adjust their choices to improve their school ranking, they need to think very seriously and carefully.
