According to Neowin , the data shows that Windows 11's market share reached 28.18%, up 0.35% from a month earlier and 9.05% year-over-year. Meanwhile, after 5 consecutive months of decline (mainly due to Windows 11's market share growth), Windows 10 increased by 0.76% to reach 67.23% (down 6.08% year-over-year).
Windows 11 market share continues to improve
With the market share gap, Windows 10 is still the dominant operating system in the Windows market and it will take a long time for Windows 11 to catch up. However, Microsoft seems to be ready for further growth in Windows 11 market share by showing more prompts to urge Windows 10 users to upgrade.
Microsoft recently announced that Windows 10 computers will no longer be eligible for Windows 11 upgrade invitations starting in April 2024. However, Windows 11 is still an optional update, meaning users can only choose to upgrade once Windows 10 is no longer fully supported by Microsoft, which will happen in October 2025.
Statcounter's specific analysis of Windows market share as of February 2024 shows that Windows 10 accounts for 67.23%; Windows 11 accounts for 28.18%; Windows 7 accounts for 3.1%; Windows 8.1 accounts for 0.66% and Windows XP accounts for 0.52%.
Analysts added that 2024 looks to be a big year for Windows 11 as manufacturers will soon start releasing new computers with a heavy focus on artificial intelligence (AI) and Microsoft is also preparing to release a major 24H2 update with AI-powered experiences for the operating system. Meanwhile, users can now install the Moment 5 update that was released on February 28.
