Meritorious Artist Duc Luu was born in 1939 in Ba Vi, Hanoi, and is famous for her role as Thi No in the film Vu Dai Village of the Past (directed by People's Artist Pham Van Khoa). Even now, when going out, many people still call her Thi No.
Sharing with VietNamNet reporter, Meritorious Artist Duc Luu said that no one in her family is in the arts. After entering the General Political Department's School of Performing Arts, she was sent to study at the Vietnam Cinema School, Course I, with People's Artist Lam Toi, People's Artist Tra Giang...
The artist said that she was blessed by her profession, she acted in few films but the most brilliant role was Thi No. She was happy because the life of an artist only needed that, like the poem of poet Xuan Dieu: " It is better to have a brilliant minute and then fade away. Than to be sad and dim for a hundred years ."

Over the past 30 years, every time she recalls the days when she went filming with the Vu Dai Village crew, her memories are still intact. At that time, everything was lacking but fun.
“The film Vu Dai Village was filmed for 6 months in many places. The crew ate on the streets and stayed at local houses at night. They brought nothing but some salty fried meat, but it was all taken by children,” she said.
Back then, there weren’t many cosmetics to use for makeup, so she had to use a packet of perfume and saliva to make lipstick. Because of the shortage, the scene of the bowl of porridge with scallion still haunts her to this day, and she doesn’t dare eat it again.
“Thi No’s bowl of onion porridge left an impression on viewers, but I am still scared to this day. Because that scene had to be filmed over and over again, and she had to swallow the sour porridge until it was so sour. Even now, just mentioning it makes me shiver,” she said.
At the age of 85, the artist is happy to still be healthy. He wakes up at 5am to meditate, eats breakfast, and then has someone give him a 1-hour massage.
“I love it. I live with a maid. My kids pay my salary and also let her learn massage so she helps me relax for an hour every day. The rest of the time I go online to read the news, have coffee with friends, and have fun with my children and grandchildren…”, she said.
A pension of over 10 million VND, according to Meritorious Artist Duc Luu, is enough for her spending level. Speaking of this, she sadly regrets, recalling her late husband.

She shared that her husband is a very patient person: “He is never jealous. Many times when he goes out, people shout loudly, ‘There is Chi Pheo’. There are even many vulgar and insensitive jokes, saying, ‘You let people squeeze your wife’s breasts like that?’ But he still doesn’t say anything.
That husband not only loves, is proud of and respects his wife's profession, but is also knowledgeable, understanding and patient. If it were someone else, the family would have been broken up long ago."
Because she respected her husband, after he passed away, despite receiving many advances, she did not remarry.
Not only her husband, her youngest son also suffered because of his mother's fame: "Wherever I went, people teased me and called me 'Chi Pheo's son'. I ran away from home because I was ashamed, and then my family had to assign me to look after him. My teachers also loved the role of Thi No, they analyzed it back and forth, and finally I understood, and everything was fine."
The profession's founder gave the role of Thi No to the audience, making them remember Duc Luu, but since then, she has lost her job and no one dared to invite her to act in a film: "Once, director Dang Nhat Minh invited me to act in a film. During the test filming, people standing around exclaimed, 'There's Thi No!'. That's it, a completely different role, different costumes, but the audience still recognized Thi No, so what else could she do? No director dared to invite me after that."
However, she has no regrets: "I am happy because my two sons are grown up, and my grandchildren are also very talented. At this age, I still study every day to set an example for them. I want to teach them to always strive, no matter how good they are, they are not as good as anyone else, they need to practice more to have a better life."
At the age of 85, she is enthusiastic about volunteer work. For her, life is about giving and receiving.
