Indonesia, Vietnam's second-largest rice importer, has just announced a tender for nearly half a million tons of rice, requiring delivery in October and November.
Indonesia's National Logistics Agency has just announced a tender for September rice with a quantity of up to 450,000 tons - the highest tender ever - of 5% broken white rice produced in the 2024 crop year (milled no more than 6 months ago).
According to Indonesia's requirements, the rice must originate from Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, and Pakistan, and will be delivered in October and November.

As of the first six months of the year, Indonesia was Vietnam's second largest rice import market, with a 44% increase compared to the same period last year, reaching nearly 709,000 tons.
According to the Vietnam Food Association (VFA), the export price of Vietnamese 5% broken white rice is currently at $563 per ton, the same as Thailand and $26 per ton higher than Pakistani rice of the same grade; it is about $10 per ton lower than at the end of August.
According to customs data, in August, Vietnamese businesses exported 837,000 tons of rice, earning $502,000; a decrease of 6% in volume and nearly 5% in value compared to the same period last year. In the first eight months of the year, Vietnam exported 6.06 million tons of rice, bringing in nearly $3.8 billion; an increase of 4.7% in volume and 20.5% in value.
According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development , Typhoon No. 3 Typhoon Yagi caused flooding and damage to 190,358 hectares of rice fields. Speaking with reporters, Mr. Nguyen Nhu Cuong, Deputy Director of the Department of Crop Production (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), stated that although Vietnam's rice export hub is located in the Mekong Delta, the severe damage from Typhoon No. 3 and the ongoing flooding in the northern provinces could affect rice production in Vietnam.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is currently compiling damage reports. The Ministry has also issued a document to the People's Committees of provinces and centrally-administered cities in the northern region, guiding farmers on restoring production after the storms and addressing crop damage, including rice production, following Typhoon No. 3.
