On May 22, despite the Israeli government's objections, the governments of Norway, Ireland and Spain held press conferences to announce their decision to recognize the State of Palestine.
According to Euronews, so far, eight member countries of the European Union (EU) including Slovakia, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Sweden have recognized the State of Palestine.
These efforts come amid escalating conflict between Israel and the Hamas Islamist movement in the Gaza Strip, prompting international calls for a ceasefire and a lasting solution for peace in the region.
On the same day, the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), internationally considered the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people, praised the decision of three European countries to recognize the State of Palestine as a “victory for truth and justice.”
