The quarter-final football match between Alianza and FAS at the Monumental Stadium in Cuscatlan (El Salvador) was postponed while rescue workers evacuated people from the stadium after a stampede left nine people dead and dozens injured.

The incident occurred as fans jostled to enter the stadium to watch the quarter-final match. Around the 16th minute of the match, chaos began in the stands as injured people were carried to the sidelines.
Interior Minister Juan Carlos Bidegain said civil defense rapid response forces were at the scene and assisting those affected, along with hundreds of police officers, soldiers and several ambulances.
According to Health Minister Francisco Alabi, El Salvador's hospital network is providing medical assistance to all victims in the incident.
El Salvador authorities will increase security following the incident.
The tragedy comes just seven months after 135 people, including more than 40 children, were killed in a stampede after a football match in Malang, Indonesia.
Indonesian police say about 3,000 fans stormed the pitch, leaving hundreds injured. It is considered one of the world's deadliest football tragedies.
