The nearly 800 billion USD export turnover that our country currently has can be increased if businesses make better use of e-commerce platforms.
Opportunities for Vietnamese goods exported through e-commerce
Quang Tri Department of Industry and Trade and OSB Group - one of Alibaba's representative authorized agents in Vietnam have just signed a memorandum of understanding on a cooperation program to promote the consumption of the province's agricultural products on e-commerce channels. This is a great opportunity for Quang Tri to promote and consume many key agricultural products such as Khe Sanh coffee, medicinal herbs, bananas, pepper, etc. on e-commerce platforms such as Alibaba or Triple.com.
This is one of the good news for Vietnam's import and export of goods. Currently, import and export of goods is a bright spot in the economic picture with a turnover expected to reach about 780-800 billion USD this year. Besides traditional import and export activities, import and export via e-commerce platforms is also one of the methods that businesses are taking advantage of relatively successfully.

According to a recent survey conducted by the Department of E-commerce - Ministry of Industry and Trade, 60% of surveyed enterprises said that the value of imported and exported goods via e-commerce accounts for 10-30%. South Korea, Japan and China are the largest online export markets of enterprises, accounting for 45%, 40% and 38% respectively.
About 53% of businesses participate in online exports via e-commerce platforms. The remaining 47% use websites or applications they build themselves.
Cross-border e-commerce has grown rapidly in recent years. Data from Amazon Global Selling Vietnam shows that in 2023, more than 17 million products of Vietnamese enterprises were exported via this platform. This number increased by 50% in value compared to the previous year. The number of partners selling through this channel also increased by 40%.
At the same time, the number of products sold by Vietnamese enterprises on Amazon has increased by more than 300% in the past 5 years. Thousands of Vietnamese small and medium enterprises are currently exporting through Amazon, with the number of enterprises with annual revenue of over 1 million USD skyrocketing nearly 10 times. Through Amazon's platform, Vietnamese goods have the opportunity to reach more than 2 billion people online each year in markets in North America, Europe and many other countries such as Australia, Japan, Singapore, India, etc.
On Alibaba.com alone, the number of people buying Vietnamese products will increase by an average of 55% in 2023. Meanwhile, the number of domestic products on the platform will increase by 24% in 2023.
Many businesses have made efforts to bring many products to international markets through e-commerce platforms. For example, China is currently the largest consumer market for Vietnamese pangasius. Currently, there are 119 businesses exporting to China. Of these, 4 businesses in the top 5 largest exporters of Vietnamese pangasius participate in exporting to this market.
Leading in terms of pangasius export value to the Chinese market is Truong Giang Seafood Joint Stock Company, accounting for 12% of the proportion; followed by Dai Thanh Seafood Company Limited, accounting for 10%, Nam Viet Joint Stock Company accounting for 7%; Hung Ca 6 Joint Stock Company and Cat Tuong and Vinh Hoan Seafood Processing Company Limited, accounting for 5%.
Among these enterprises, Vinh Hoan Seafood has exported pangasius to China via e-commerce platforms since 2019. The company identifies this as an important channel not only for sales but also for brand promotion. Because Chinese consumers who buy goods via e-commerce platforms are often well-off, knowledgeable and trust the quality of products advertised and traded on e-commerce platforms.
As a small business but has successfully utilized e-commerce for export, Ms. Hoang Thi Thanh Tam - Director of Don Creative Investment and Development Joint Stock Company, the company has about 60 products on the Alibaba.com e-commerce platform. Up to now, Indochina has had more than 3,000 orders from the US, Canada, Denmark, Japan, Korea... Revenue from the Alibaba platform has contributed greatly to the business's revenue.
Mr. Ta Hoang Linh, Director of the European and American Market Department - Ministry of Industry and Trade, commented that cross-border e-commerce is increasingly booming and growing rapidly. In the context of Vietnam being a country with strong growth in foreign trade activities, participating in the online import and export system and cross-border e-commerce channels is an effective solution, opening up many opportunities for Vietnamese enterprises to expand their customer base, increase market access, improve business capacity and export value.
Overcoming barriers
Despite some successes, according to businesses and experts, the level of participation in exporting via e-commerce is still limited. The reason is that most small and medium-sized enterprises mainly process orders and designs from foreign distributors. Most businesses are small in scale, do not have enough capacity to build a brand, and have poor resilience to sudden and continuous fluctuations in the market.
In addition, an inherent limitation of small and medium enterprises - the business sector that accounts for a large proportion of the business community - is the limitation in brand building.
To support businesses, the Ministry of Industry and Trade is currently making efforts to develop and perfect the digital trade promotion ecosystem, perfecting corresponding digital platforms for direct trade promotion activities to promptly support businesses, cooperatives and business households to operate effectively in the digital environment.
On the business side, recently, Vietnam Post Corporation launched the e-commerce platform nongsan.buudien.vn, diversifying opportunities for businesses to export products across borders via the e-commerce platform.
Mr. Nguyen Truong Giang - Head of the Board of Directors of Vietnam Post Corporation said that with the motto "Each product is a gift to consumers", the e-commerce platform nongsan.buudien.vn not only serves daily consumption needs but is also a sophisticated choice for meaningful gifts for relatives and friends; at the same time, it aims to export to potential foreign markets such as China, Korea, and Japan.
