Since the beginning of the year, the total asset value of the super-rich has increased sharply, mainly due to the hot growth of the artificial intelligence sector, luxury goods and global geopolitical fluctuations.
According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, the world now has 15 people with assets of $100 billion or more for the first time. They own a total of $2.2 trillion, equivalent to 25% of the assets of the top 500 richest people on the planet.
Forbes' real-time billionaires list also recorded 15 people with assets worth hundreds of billions of dollars. Of these, 9 people got rich from the technology sector.
These “mega-billionaires” hold nearly 25% of the total wealth of the world’s 500 richest people. Although all 15 of these mega-billionaires have had assets worth more than $100 billion at some point in the past, this is the first time all 15 of them simultaneously hold assets worth more than $100 billion.
Topping the list is Bernard Arnault, founder and CEO of luxury goods conglomerate LVMH, with a net worth of $222 billion. Most of his wealth comes from his ownership of LVMH shares.
Ranked second with a fortune of 208 billion USD is Mr. Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, thanks to holding the world's largest online retail company. Billionaire Elon Musk, CEO of electric car manufacturer Tesla, has a fortune of 187 billion USD, ranking 3rd on the above list.
Recent newcomers include L'Oreal cosmetics heiress Francoise Bettencourt Meyers, Dell Technologies founder Michael Dell and Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim.
Notably, Ms. Bettencourt Meyers became the first woman in the world to own a fortune of hundreds of billions of dollars when L'Oreal shares skyrocketed after recording the best business year since 1998. She is 70 years old this year, the 14th richest person in the world with a fortune of 101 billion USD.
Meanwhile, Mr. Dell recently saw his fortune hit $100 billion as rising demand for AI-related devices pushed Dell Technologies stock to a record high. He is now the world’s 11th richest person, with $113 billion.
Another notable figure is billionaire Slim, ranked 13th with a fortune of $106 billion. This billionaire has added $28 billion since the beginning of the year. The shares of companies in his empire, from construction to restaurants, have skyrocketed.
Indian billionaire Gautam Adani lost his fortune from the $100 billion mark last year due to short selling of Adani Group shares. However, Adani has recently regained his fortune thanks to the company's stock rebounding as global investors increasingly show interest in doing business in India.
