Not new but always a big pressure

The story that the workshop raised is indeed a story that "already known, very painful, talked about forever" but is always an important topic that members and journalists are interested in. As the host of the workshop, journalist Tran Hoai Nam - Chairman of the Cao Bang Provincial Journalists Association raised the issue that, in the stormy development trend of information technology, the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence..., many personal information channels through domestic and foreign social networks have appeared, diversifying information, but also causing difficulties in determining the accuracy and authenticity of information...

Therefore, the mainstream press has a leading role, a support for accuracy, honesty, and orientation of public opinion. At the same time, the press participates in the effective and legal fight against corruption, moral degradation, lifestyle; cultural hybridization of a number of cadres, party members, and even journalists. That reality places more and more responsibility on journalists, not only the story of confronting in the fight against criticism but also the courage to "surpass oneself" and improve "resistance" when participating in the social network environment.

In fact, in recent years, there have been cases where journalists and members have been disciplined by authorities for violations when using social networks, from reporting false information to violating professional ethics. At some press agencies, there have been cases where reporters have been disciplined for sharing unverified information, which has greatly affected the reputation of the press agency and the Association. These violations not only violate professional ethics but also seriously affect people's trust in the press.

Members of the Journalists Association are directly responsible for complying with professional ethics and legal regulations when participating in social networks. In the process of using social networks, each member must be clearly aware that they represent not only themselves but also the press agency and the Journalists Association. Therefore, acts of sharing false information and irresponsible statements can cause serious consequences...

Overview of the Workshop with the theme "Improving professional ethics and behavioral culture of journalists in using social networks" organized by the Cao Bang Provincial Journalists Association.

“Therefore, delegates and leaders of the Journalists Association of the Northern midland and mountainous provinces and Hanoi city together recognized and evaluated the advantages and limitations, drew lessons and solutions to build a clean, strong and effective Association.

In particular, the delegates emphasized the role of the Journalists Association in political and ideological work, professional ethics for members and journalists; Responsibilities and solutions of the Journalists Association in building a team of Vietnamese revolutionary journalists; Difficulties and obstacles in implementing the Code of Professional Ethics for Journalists; Promoting the building of a cultural environment in press agencies...; Taking the lead in implementing the emulation movement to build a cultural environment for journalism; Promoting education and fostering political ideology, professional ethics, and professional expertise for members; Strengthening inspection and supervision of compliance with the law on journalism, the Code of Professional Ethics and the Rules for using social networks by Vietnamese journalists; Paying attention to protecting the legitimate rights and interests of the Association and its members; rewarding and proposing superiors to reward organizations and individuals with outstanding achievements in the Association's work and journalism activities..." - journalist Hoai Nam informed.

Coordinate prevention and correction of violations

How to effectively prevent and correct ethical violations in cyberspace is not an easy story. Journalist Nguyen Bao Lam - Member of the Executive Committee of the Vietnam Journalists Association, Chairman of the Thai Nguyen Provincial Journalists Association said : "To ensure that no violations occur, special attention is needed from the press management agencies as well as from each individual member of the Journalists Association. The role and responsibility of each agency and unit from the Provincial Party Committee's Propaganda Department, the Department of Information and Communications to the Journalists Association, and each press agency becomes more important than ever."

From the perspective of the "common home" of the press in the area, Mr. Lam added that, under the direction of the Vietnam Journalists Association, local associations such as the Thai Nguyen Journalists Association play an important role in building professional ethics and raising the sense of responsibility of its members. The Association has coordinated with press agencies to set out specific regulations on the use of social networks, requiring members to regularly implement these regulations on online platforms. The Thai Nguyen Journalists Association has had many initiatives in monitoring and correcting the activities of its members. Strengthening professional ethics and compliance with the rules of using social networks, requiring each member to commit to complying with the regulations when participating in these platforms...

In fact, in Thai Nguyen and many other localities, there has been a situation where some journalists write quite good official articles but make incorrect and unstandard statements on social networks. This contradiction reduces public trust and distorts the nature of journalism. Therefore, the Provincial Party Committee's Propaganda Department, the Department of Information and Communications, press agencies and organizations such as the Journalists Association, have agreed on specific policies and measures to remind members and reporters of the importance of maintaining consistency in viewpoints and statements. This can be done through the promulgation of a code of conduct, requiring journalists to not only comply with professional ethics when writing articles but also when using social networks. Agencies need to strengthen inspection and strictly handle violations to prevent negative consequences...

“The participation of journalists on social networks is inevitable in the digital age, but it also poses many challenges and strict requirements on ethics and professional responsibility. To prevent violations, there needs to be close coordination between management agencies, press organizations and each journalist himself. Propaganda, education, building codes of conduct and raising personal awareness are effective solutions to ensure that journalists not only participate effectively on social networks but also maintain the prestige and professional qualities of the team of journalists” - Chairman of Thai Nguyen Journalists Association proposed.

Maintaining prestige and quality requires all levels of the Association to invest in training and improving the politics, ideology and ethics of journalists in the current challenging context, and that is also the issue that journalist Ma Van Chuc - Permanent Vice President of the Tuyen Quang Journalists Association raised at the Workshop. He also made seven practical recommendations to solve the difficult problem, in which he especially emphasized that the press management and direction agencies such as Propaganda, Information and Communication need to closely coordinate with the Journalists Association to promptly adjust behaviors related to journalistic ethics; avoid overlap...

At the same time, the Permanent Vice President of the Tuyen Quang Journalists Association also affirmed that it is necessary to thoroughly investigate and strictly handle violations of the law and professional ethics of journalists and those who impersonate journalists for personal gain, along with promptly praising and rewarding good people and good deeds among journalists...

It can be said that the workshop's issues brought many effective solutions, especially the importance of the participation of coordinating units. Efforts to prevent and handle violations to further improve professional ethics and behavioral culture of journalists in using social networks, are not only included in the discussion opinions but continue to be an "open problem" for activities at the Branches, Inter-Branch Associations, Journalists Associations at all levels before the Congresses at all levels of the Association towards the 12th National Congress of Delegates of the Vietnam Journalists Association.
