A 99-year-old male patient from Soc Trang province was transferred to Can Tho Central General Hospital with pain, swelling, and limited mobility in the left thigh-groin area after falling at home.
The patient was admitted to the Orthopedic Trauma Center for monitoring. Through clinical examination and paraclinical tests, the doctor determined that the patient had a left femoral intertrochanteric fracture with many serious underlying diseases.
Patients with severe hypertension-heart failure, severe aortic valve regurgitation, acute renal failure in recovery phase.
The patient was consulted by many specialists: Cardiology, Respiratory Medicine, Orthopedics, Anesthesia and Resuscitation, Nephrology - Artificial Kidney, Nutrition to comprehensively assess risk factors, choose appropriate treatment methods, anesthesia methods... The surgical and anesthesia and resuscitation team carefully examined and explained to the family in detail about all possible situations.
Surgery for elderly patients like this one is a challenge for the entire surgical team, especially for anesthesiologists. The doctors decided to perform bone fusion surgery with an intramedullary nail in the left femur on a fluoroscopy monitor for the patient.
The surgical team was performed by the Orthopedic Trauma Center. The surgery lasted 40 minutes, the patient's condition was closely monitored by anesthesiologists, and after surgery the patient was monitored and treated at the Orthopedic Trauma Center.
Current condition: patient is awake, vital signs are stable, health is recovering well, surgical wound is dry, and physical therapy is being instructed after discharge.
