CHINA - For violating the regulations of the Global Mathematics Competition, both teacher Wang Runqiu and student Jiang Ping had their qualifying results canceled.
Regarding the incident in which a teacher at Lien Thuy Vocational College (China) helped a female student pass the exam to the top of the global math competition, the organizers of the competition admitted that cheating occurred due to lax management of the exam system.
Taking advantage of the loophole, in 2024, teacher Vuong Nhuan Thu participated in the competition with his student Khuong Binh. The results of the qualifying round were announced by the organizing committee on June 13, teacher Thu ranked 125/802 and his student ranked 12/802. Both made it to the finals.
The reason why the female student ranked higher was because she took the exam later and was sent the answer sheet by the teacher who took the exam earlier. Accordingly, Mr. Thu has participated in the competition 3 times. In 2022, participating in the qualifying round, Mr. Thu ranked 166th, in 2023, ranked 432nd, entered the final but did not win the prize.
After an investigation, the organizing committee confirmed that because of violations of the contest regulations, the qualifying round results of Mr. Thu and his students were canceled. The organizing committee said that according to the contest rules, the qualifying round takes place online with open questions. Candidates have the right to use online and offline documents. However, discussing and exchanging answers with others is strictly prohibited.
Currently, there are many conflicting opinions about the incident. In addition to being reprimanded by the school and stripped of his award (as an excellent competitor), Mr. Thu also received a lot of criticism for participating in the competition with bad intentions.
Based on the results announced by the organizing committee of the Global Mathematics Competition, this year, 86/802 contestants won prizes, including 5 Gold prizes, 10 Silver prizes, 20 Bronze prizes and 51 Encouragement prizes. Of these, 5 contestants won Gold prizes, coming from Peking University (2 contestants), Tsinghua University (2 contestants) and the University of Maryland (USA).
