Last week, teacher Nguyen Thanh Cong had some health problems and had to be hospitalized. Hearing that he was sick, the 12th grade students of the Biology major at the National University of Education High School for the Gifted went to the hospital to visit him.

“I was in the hospital alone with no one to talk to, but the students kept telling stories, sharing, and asking questions, making me laugh the whole time. When the whole class came to visit, I knew that some students were still waiting for the phone call about the SAT exam results. And then suddenly student Pham Do Thai An exclaimed: “Wow, I got 1,600 points (the perfect score on the SAT exam)”, all eyes turned to the phone screen because the result was so amazing.

After checking again and confirming that it was correct, the whole group was overwhelmed but no one dared to scream because they understood that they were in the hospital. Thai An's hands were shaking with happiness. The whole group hugged Thai An and congratulated him on the amazing result. I was also happy and felt better from that moment on," said Mr. Cong.

This excellent result is even more impressive because this is the first time Thai An has taken the SAT.

The joy did not stop there. Because not long after the news of Thai An's perfect score, the homeroom teacher continuously received messages from other students in the class with scores close to the same.

According to Mr. Cong, this year's Biology 12 class has 34 students, but only about 10 students focused on taking the SAT to prepare for study abroad options and domestic university admissions using the results of this exam. Up to this point, in addition to Thai An, the class also has Ha Quang Khue with 1,570 points; Nguyen Thi Thao Nguyen with 1,560 points (this female student also took the IELTS test with 8.5 and was the first prize winner in the national excellent student selection exam for the 2023-2024 school year); Nguyen Phuong Thao with 1,500 points. The remaining students are in the range of 1,350 to under 1,500 points.

Teacher Cong shared that the positive and good results of his students are like great spiritual medicine for himself.

“I always keep in mind that the career assets of every teacher are the generations of students that they have contributed to training. Every success of a student, big or small, is the result of their efforts, the support of their teachers, family and friends. We, the teachers, are happy to contribute to each of those successes. I am fortunate to work in an environment with many good teachers, many “super” students and a very strong alumni community, which is the High School for the Gifted of the National University of Education,” Mr. Cong shared.

Teacher Cong said that the Biology class of the University of Education High School for the Gifted met each other from the first days of the 2022-2023 school year with 34 students and he was assigned as the homeroom teacher. Like other Biology courses at the school, the students are always cared for and taught in many aspects.

In terms of learning, the school's curriculum along with the serious study plan of each student in the class is clearly demonstrated in the results of the national excellent student exam for the 2023-2024 school year. Specifically, the class has 6 students who won 1 First Prize, 1 Second Prize, 3 Third Prizes and 1 Encouragement Prize in the national excellent student exam in Biology. In addition, 12th grade Biology students also participated in a number of other exams and achieved high results, such as: 1 Gold Medal in the World Innovation and Invention Exam in Korea; 2 Silver Medals, 1 Bronze Medal and 1 Encouragement Prize in the online USBIO exam and many medals in the excellent student exams in the Northern Coast, excellent student exams at the school level, etc.

Not only do they study well, both teachers and students participate in building a united and loving classroom.

“The classes at the High School for the Gifted at the University of Education are all places where excellent students gather. Perhaps the 12th grade Biology class achieved such good results first of all thanks to the good quality of the input, in addition to the appropriate training program; personalized for each student to help them develop best in their own directions.

In grades 11 and 12, students only study at school in the morning, and in the afternoon they are free to study, research and develop in their own directions. Perhaps, that is what helps them achieve many achievements not only in their studies but also in extracurricular activities,” Mr. Cong shared.

Mr. Cong is also happy that many students in the class are also the heads or managers of clubs in the school or inter-school in Hanoi, participating in organizing many large-scale programs. There are students who won Gold Medals at international piano festivals, and some students won prizes in domestic and international science and technology competitions.

“All of this has contributed to creating a 12th grade Biology class of the Pedagogical College that is good, diverse, united, but still maintains each person's individuality. That is the best thing that I - the homeroom teacher - have when accompanying the class,” said Mr. Cong.

The secret to getting high SAT scores of a female student majoring in Pedagogy:

As a student in the Biology class at the National University of Education High School for the Gifted, Pham Do Thai An hopes to take the IELTS and SAT exams to realize her goal of being admitted to some universities in the country. After achieving IELTS 7.5, in mid-August this year, An continued to study for the SAT. During the 3 months of studying, in addition to studying at a center, the female student also searched for materials online to practice.

Studying at a specialized school helped Thai An develop a self-study method and logical thinking style early on. However, at first, the female student only dared to set a goal of achieving over 1500 points because that score was just enough to apply to some desired schools.

With his natural strengths in math and natural sciences, An assessed that the math section of the SAT was not too difficult. “Although this test includes many types of math such as equations, lines, trigonometry... for Vietnamese students, this knowledge is not a puzzle.”

However, according to An, there are some questions that are "easy to trick" if candidates do not pay attention, for example, instead of asking to find x, the question will ask to find 3x, 4x. "If candidates do not read the question carefully, it is very easy to get confused," An said.

Although Math is not a “difficult” part, the challenge for the female student lies in the Reading and Writing section. During the review period, An rarely achieved a perfect score in this section. The female student often made mistakes in the Words in Context type exercises. To improve this, each time she made a mistake, An often wrote down the content she often made mistakes in, and at the end of the week, she would print it out into a book to correct herself.

One of An's secrets when doing the Reading and Writing section is to avoid reading and translating each sentence, which is quite time-consuming. Instead, An often looks for keywords and grasps the main idea of the passage, which makes reading faster and easier to understand.

“Some students often have the habit of memorizing sentences that are often repeated in the test. But in reality, sometimes the test can keep the first part of the question and change the question. If you rely on the similarity without paying attention to the question, choosing based on what you know will be very easy to make mistakes. Therefore, the effective way to learn is to train your thinking to solve the problem,” An said.

Despite achieving a perfect SAT score and having a wide range of opportunities to enter many universities around the world, An said she has no intention of studying abroad. “Currently, the medical industry in Vietnam is also very developed and invested in facilities. Therefore, I hope to receive a good scholarship to be able to study in Vietnam,” said the female student of the Pedagogical College.
