From the story of "inflation" of high scores, more than 9 points in one subject still failing the first choice are issues worth thinking about in university admissions this year...
The reality of getting more than 9 points in one subject but still failing the first choice is something worth thinking about in this year's university admission season. (Illustration photo: VGP) |
The 2024 high school graduation exam has ended with many surprises, especially the story of the sudden increase in university entrance scores. Even many candidates who scored 9.5 points per subject still could not pass the major they wanted. This has sparked many controversies and raised many questions about fairness, education quality and future orientation of candidates.
"So what does it mean that a score of more than 9 points in one subject still fails the university entrance exam? Is it true that the high school graduation exam is not the only and absolute measure to evaluate a student's ability? High scores only reflect part of the candidate's knowledge, there are many other factors that are also very important such as skills, creative thinking, and teamwork ability." |
First of all, it must be admitted that the competition for university admission is increasingly fierce. The number of candidates is increasing, while the number of quotas for universities is limited. This leads to a situation of "burning" quotas in many hot majors, leading to a sharp increase in admission scores. However, the fact that admission scores are increasing so high that candidates with high scores still fail is a matter worth thinking about.
There are many reasons for this situation, this may be due to the increasing number of candidates applying to top schools, creating great competitive pressure. At the same time, the admission criteria of universities are increasingly diverse, not only based on high school graduation exam scores but also considering other factors such as academic records, capacity assessments, etc.
So what does it mean that a score of more than 9 points in one subject still fails the university entrance exam? Is it true that the high school graduation exam is not the only and absolute measure to evaluate a student's ability? High scores only reflect a part of the candidate's knowledge, there are many other factors that are also very important such as skills, thinking, creativity, and teamwork ability. Focusing too much on exam scores will lead to a situation where students only focus on memorizing knowledge to get high scores, without paying attention to comprehensive self-development.
In fact, the pressure on students to study is increasing. To achieve high scores, many students have to study hard, day and night. Perhaps, it is time for us to change the way we evaluate students. Instead of focusing only on imparting knowledge, schools should pay more attention to developing students' thinking, creativity, and problem-solving abilities. In particular, there should be policies to reduce the curriculum, create conditions for students to participate in extracurricular activities, and develop skills.
In addition, schools must advise and provide students with complete and accurate information about careers and universities, helping them choose a major that suits their abilities and interests.
Solving the problem of inadequacies in university admissions is a long-term process and requires efforts from many sides. In particular, it is necessary to innovate teaching and learning methods, focusing on developing students' thinking, creativity, and problem-solving abilities instead of just focusing on book knowledge. Building a database of students' abilities, helping universities have a more comprehensive view. Adjusting quotas, balancing enrollment quotas between majors, avoiding overload in some majors and shortage of students in other majors.
In addition, the State needs to invest heavily in education, especially in improving the quality of teachers, building modern facilities and innovating training programs. From there, it is possible to create a fair, quality educational environment that truly develops the capacity of each individual.
Immediately after a series of universities announced the admission scores based on high school graduation exam scores, the shortcomings and limitations of admissions were also revealed. Many majors of many schools had their admission scores skyrocket, commonly above 28 points. In particular, the Literature and History Pedagogy majors of Hanoi National University of Education had the admission score for the C00 combination (Literature - History - Geography) reaching 29.3 - also a record high score for this school. The Journalism and Public Relations majors of the Institute of Journalism and Communication, University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Hanoi) have the standard scores for the C00 combination of 29.03 and 29.1, respectively. The benchmark score of the Hanoi University of Culture also increased dramatically when 6/18 majors considered C00 scores from 23.85 to under 26.98 points; the remaining 12 majors have a benchmark score above 27, the highest major is up to 28.9 points... |
