Semi-automatic offside detection technology helps referees shorten decision-making time and achieve greater accuracy. |
For the first time in Premier League history, SAOT (Special Offensive Team) has been implemented. This is considered a major turning point in refereeing in the world's most exciting league, following numerous controversies surrounding VAR in recent times.
SAOT was approved by Premier League clubs last summer, with the initial plan being to implement it at the start of the season. However, due to some technical issues and concerns about accuracy, the launch date has been repeatedly postponed.
Previously, SAOT was tested in the fifth round of the FA Cup. After receiving positive feedback, the Premier League organizers decided to deploy this technology from the 32nd round of the 2024/25 season.
Developed by Genius Sports, a US-based sports technology company, the technology utilizes a system of 28 specialized cameras on each playing field. These cameras track over 10,000 points of motion data for each player, accurately reproducing their position and offside situations in real time.
Premier League Technical Director Tony Scholes believes SAOT will help shorten the time it takes to make offside decisions, reducing it by at least 30 seconds compared to the current process. In addition, FIFA is supporting the league in developing an automatic offside alert feature that doesn't require assistant referees to raise their flags.
"SAOT will automate key elements in determining offside to support VAR, while providing a more intuitive visual experience for fans in stadiums and on television. This technology maintains fairness in the decision-making process while improving speed, efficiency and consistency," the Premier League announcement stated.
