This strange incident happened in Medellin (Colombia). The couple's identities are kept secret. It all started in 2012, when the husband wanted to have a vasectomy, according to Daily Mail (UK).
Court rules doctor who performed botched vasectomy must pay child support until child turns 18
The reason he wanted to have a vasectomy was because he did not want to have more children. He and his wife already had two children. The family's finances were tight and it would not be enough to feed another mouth. Therefore, he went to a clinic in Medellin to have a vasectomy. The identity of the doctor who performed the vasectomy was not disclosed by the media.
After the procedure, the man even underwent a medical check-up at the clinic to make sure the vasectomy had actually worked. The clinic confirmed that the procedure had been successful.
However, in 2013, the man’s wife suddenly became pregnant again, much to their surprise. The vasectomy had failed. The child was a girl and was indeed his. In 2017, the couple decided to sue the clinic and the doctor who performed the vasectomy.
The case has dragged on for years. Recently, the Medellin City Court issued a final judgment. The court ordered the clinic and doctor to pay 60 million pesos, more than 300 million VND, in legal fees to the couple. At the same time, they must continue to pay 235 million pesos, about 1.3 billion VND, for the child until he turns 18.
Because the man suffered from poor health, hearing loss, frequent drowsiness and vomiting, he had a lot of difficulty working. The court said this decision was reasonable because the failed vasectomy not only affected the couple's sexual and reproductive freedom but also had a huge financial impact, making it difficult to care for the child, according to the Daily Mail .
