As the 2024 US presidential election approaches, more and more Republicans are predicting voter fraud.

Recently, the Washington Post published an article on October 14 stating that one of the central themes of the 2024 presidential election is that Americans live in at least two different information environments, due to partisan divisions.
'Confusion' due to division
A CBS News poll released on October 13 demonstrated the divide between Democrats and Republicans on basic issues and the trustworthiness of different sources of information.
The poll, conducted by YouGov, surveyed opinions on a range of politicians (including former US President Donald Trump, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris) and groups that provide data and views to the American people (such as friends and family, scientists, political parties).
Survey respondents were asked whether information from these sources was accurate; well-intentioned but often false; or mostly intentional lies.
Overall, the most trusted group was the friends and family of the survey subjects, who were believed to be more likely to tell the truth.
Scientists were placed in second place, with a majority of Democrats trusting this source, but Republicans were more divided.
Most sources of information were found to lie more than they told the truth. The source of information that respondents described as most honest was their own party's candidate. The source of information that was found to be most dishonest was the opposition party's candidate.
'Trump Syndrome' and Fraud
The divide has long existed and influenced the 2016 and 2020 elections. However, in 2024, it seems that the “protective layer” around former President Donald Trump has become stronger.
There is no evidence that significant fraud occurred in 2020… and there is no reason to think it will occur this year. |
Accordingly, within the Republican Party, there are fewer voices criticizing Mr. Trump, while social networks are also less interested in limiting misinformation, even accepting it.
In fact, Republicans—who appear to have “Trump syndrome,” suspicious of all non-Trump institutions—are more likely to view government reports as lies, even economic reports.
This suspicion also surfaced in another set of questions in the poll. Respondents were asked to rate the state of measurable economic and government factors: stock prices, employment data and border crossing figures.
Stocks are rising, job growth is up, and border crossings have fallen in recent weeks. But Republicans either say the opposite is true or say things haven’t changed much.
Nearly half of Republicans also told YouGov they believe there will be “widespread fraud and illegal voting” in November, in large cities and urban areas. Few think it will happen in rural areas.
According to the Washington Post , this is not surprising, as only 3 in 10 people admit that the 2020 election actually resulted in a victory for President Biden.
Most Republicans who said there would be fraud said it was likely to happen in “racial minority communities.” Less than half thought it would happen in “predominantly white communities.”
Most Republicans also say that if former President Trump loses in November, he and his party should “challenge and investigate the results.”
Again, there is no evidence that significant fraud occurred in 2020, despite what Mr Trump and his allies have tried to prove over the past four years. And there is no reason to think it will happen this year.
With just three weeks to go until the US presidential election, which is expected to take place every four years, the candidates are still neck and neck in the polls. Trump or Harris, “America First” or a new history with the first female President, all will remain unknown until Tuesday, November 5.
Whoever the new US President is, the challenges he will face will not be easy, on immigration, the economy, climate change and serious ongoing conflicts.
