Sharing on Daily Mail on April 19, the former Liverpool midfielder analyzed: "It would be crazy if MU let Mainoo leave. If anyone has forgotten Mainoo's talent, then what he showed in extra time against Lyon confirmed it. A player who can withstand pressure at such a young age is a valuable asset that coach Ruben Amorim can take advantage of."
Mainoo entered the field in the 87th minute of the Europa League quarter-final second leg against Lyon on April 18. He was the one who scored the equalizer to make it 4-4 for the "Red Devils", creating the premise for Harry Maguire to seal the score at 5-4 just 1 minute later.
In Mainoo's goal, the midfielder handled the ball skillfully in the penalty area before finishing with a powerful finish, which Murphy said was "no less than any real striker".
"I'm surprised Mainoo hasn't played more for United this season," Murphy added. "Especially when the team has problems in midfield. I know Mainoo has had injuries. I know Amorim thinks Mainoo has been a bit weak defensively in some games, but that's normal for a young midfielder in the Premier League. He's having to adapt to different positions in the team's system."
The former Liverpool midfielder believes Mainoo is fully capable of developing his defensive abilities if he receives enough help from his teammates and coaching staff. Murphy also believes that Amorim does not seem to have full faith in Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte, so Mainoo will still be a promising long-term solution for the "Red Devils".
The Old Trafford team will host Wolves in round 33 of the Premier League on the night of April 20.
