Not knowing the third subject in the entrance exam to grade 10 of public high schools, many students in Hanoi are "struggling" and exhausted because they have to study too much to prepare for the upcoming very stressful exam.
This year's 9th graders are the first to take the exam under the new program. Therefore, the changes in the entrance exam have made students and parents extremely worried.
What many students and parents are worried about is that "the third subject has changed over the years" and the announcement time is quite late (according to the proposal of the Ministry of Education and Training, it is before March 31 every year). The choice of "the third subject has changed over the years" from the perspective of the Ministry of Education and Training is to achieve the goal of comprehensive education in the basic education stage.
Since the beginning of the 9th grade school year, there has been almost no evening when Dieu Nghi (grade 9, Nguyen Huy Tuong Secondary School, Dong Anh, Hanoi) has had dinner before 8pm because of her busy schedule of extra classes. Many days, she has so much homework that she has to eat dinner and study at the same time. Dieu Nghi said that the third exam subject doubles the pressure on the 10th grade entrance exam.
"Because we don't know what the third subject is, our studies are very heavy. In addition to focusing on studying the three subjects of Math, Literature, and Foreign Language, which takes a lot of time, many students have to take extra classes in Physics, Chemistry, or Biology. I myself have to take extra Chemistry classes at night because I'm afraid the third subject will fall into this subject. 9th graders like me are very stressed and worried. If the third subject is Natural Science, students who are inclined towards Social Sciences will be "unable to cope", because the knowledge of Natural Science subjects is very difficult. If the third subject is Social Science, the knowledge is very broad, and we have to memorize a lot. Most of us hope the third subject is Foreign Language," said Dieu Nghi.
Parents and candidates are stressed and tired with the entrance exam to grade 10 of Hanoi public high schools.
As the first year of taking the exam under the new program, this year's 9th graders are under a lot of pressure because they "don't know how to practice". "In addition to the Canh Dieu books we learn at school, we also have to learn more knowledge from the Ket Noi and Chan Troi Sang Tao books because we don't know which books will be included in the exam. Like previous years, students could use old exam questions to practice, but this school year, we can't do that. Teachers work very hard to always create new exam questions for students to do. Every month we have to do a survey test. Before we finish this exam, we are already preparing for the next one. The continuous, consecutive exams make us always stressed and tired. I hope the third exam will be announced soon so that we can study focusedly instead of being spread out and ineffective like now. I think the third exam does not help students develop comprehensively but puts them under more pressure", Dieu Nghi said tiredly.
Like many parents with children born in 2010, Ms. Nguyen Minh Loan (Dong Da District, Hanoi) is also very worried about the "third exam subject". "Changing the third exam subject over the years only puts pressure on 9th graders to increase review subjects and practice exam questions. We should not expect all children to study well in all subjects. The children's current study is already very stressful. If it is spread out across all subjects, the quality will not be good. Everyone only has strengths in certain aspects. If the Ministry of Education and Training wants children to study equally, it should use the scores of all subjects as criteria for graduating from junior high school, and the selection for high school requires specialization to have good input quality. I hope that the Hanoi Department of Education and Training should decide on 3 fixed subjects: Math, Literature, and Foreign Language for the 10th grade entrance exam. The third exam subject is Foreign Language, which will be in line with the general trend in the context of international integration", Ms. Minh Loan shared.
Not only are they concerned about the change of the third exam subject every year, what many parents feel impatient about is that the third exam subject is announced too late, causing more pressure on students. "The third exam subject should be announced at the beginning of the 9th grade school year so that both teachers and students have an effective study and exam preparation direction, without too much pressure. This way, it is ensured that there are still 3 years of study for students to study normally, absorbing a relatively large amount of knowledge of the subjects. As for the final year, which is the sprint year to prepare for the exam, it is impossible to force students to study well in all subjects. Announcing the third exam subject 2 months in advance makes the "sprint" for students very tiring, especially for candidates who are not strong in that subject," Ms. Vu Thuy Ha (Ha Dong District, Hanoi) said indignantly.
