Towards the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South - National Reunification Day, this afternoon, April 21, the Vietnam News Agency Union organized an exchange program with People's Armed Forces Hero To Van Duc (who was known as the "Mine Hero" for his initiatives in creating mines to destroy enemy tanks in the past in the Steel Land of Cu Chi), along with representatives of the film crew "Tunnels: Sun in the Dark" - right after watching this special historical war film.
Reminder of history and responsibility with the pen
After 3 weeks of screening, “Tunnels: The Sun in the Dark” - the first Vietnamese revolutionary war film produced entirely with socialized capital, without using the state budget, has made a strong impression on the public, especially the younger generation, because of its realistic war reality and profound humanity.
Sharing right after watching the film, Deputy Secretary of the Youth Union of Vietnam News Agency Cao Chu Dieu Linh said that "Tunnels: Sun in the Dark" is a vivid, realistic and emotional work recreating the resilient fight of our army and people at Cu Chi tunnels.
And so that the story of the past does not remain only in numbers or lines of documents, but continues to be told emotionally through vivid memories and perspectives of the people involved, the Vietnam News Agency Union (including the Unions of the Center for Documentary Information & Graphics and the Editorial Secretariat & External Relations, VietnamPlus Electronic Newspaper, World News Editorial Board, Vietnam News Agency Office, News Agency International Cooperation Center, News Agency Technical Center) contacted and had a special exchange with Hero of the People's Armed Forces To Van Duc and the film crew "Tunnels: Sun in the Dark."

“In the days when the whole country is looking forward to the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and the reunification of the country, the film is not only a cinematic work, but also an opportunity for every young person, especially those of us working for the News Agency, to appreciate the glorious past of our predecessors,” Linh emphasized.
More than 260 VNA officials, reporters and technicians have sacrificed their lives on the information front. This is not only a historic number, but also a part of history that has been deeply engraved in the tradition of dedication and service to the Fatherland of VNA journalists.
“Today, the stories in the film Tunnels and from the guests not only help us visualize a time of war and war, but also remind today's young generation that living in peace is a sacred gift, and the responsibility to preserve and promote that tradition is placed on us - those who are writing in times of peace,” Linh added.
Contribute to spreading the heroic revolutionary history
Sharing in the exchange program, Hero of the People's Armed Forces To Van Duc said that the film "Tunnels: Sun in the Dark" although only depicts a "slice" of the heroic real story as well as a part of the historical image, has shown the fighting spirit against the US of the people of Cu Chi.
“After watching the film about my and my comrades' fight, I was very moved, because the memories of the time of bombs and bullets are always present in my mind,” said Mr. Duc.

Talking about the scene where the character Tu Dap (the prototype of Mr. Duc himself) is portrayed as a clever engineer soldier, specializing in bomb disposal, making weapons to support the guerrilla team in the film, played by actor Quang Tuan, Mr. Duc said that the actor performed this part very well. However, according to him, that only reflects a part of his work in real life in the past.
As the “father” of “Tunnels: Sun in the Dark,” Director Bui Thac Chuyen said that in order to bring the “land of fire” - the “steel tunnels” of Cu Chi to the public, he spent 11 years making this historical war film, from the time he conceived the idea in 2014 until the film was released to audiences early last April.
The film aims to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South - National Reunification Day, and is also an "opportunity" for the domestic and international public to better understand the history of revolutionary war and guerrilla warfare of the people of the steel land of Cu Chi.
“It must be said that this is a very difficult war film to make, never before made in Cu Chi. The reason is that this story takes place underground, everything in the tunnels is dark, there is no light, so it is very difficult to film the scenes. In cinema, if there is no light, it is considered that there is no film. The second difficulty is that the space of the tunnel entrances is very narrow, so the film crew with nearly 300 people with many different departments, cannot enter the tunnels at the same time. These are really very challenging things. Therefore, every segment and scene had to be divided into small parts to create the most realistic way, so it took a lot of time,” Director Bui Thac Chuyen recalled.
Another special thing is that, to make a war film - a genre that has traditionally been invested by the State, businessman Nguyen Thanh Nam, one of the founders of FPT , "invested" more than 50 billion VND in the project "Tunnel: Sun in the Dark."

Sharing the reason why he spent a large amount of money on this film project, the former CEO of FPT said that in the 2000s, through many trips abroad such as the US, many people seemed to not know about Vietnam, so he always cherished the idea of doing something to promote the image, especially the heroic revolutionary history of the country.
Second, the story of the steel land of Cu Chi itself “is very special and strongly inspiring.” Therefore, when listening to Director Bui Thac Chuyen share about the idea, the former CEO of FPT decided to “invest” to share the heroic historical story about the revolutionary war, guerrilla warfare of Vietnam, especially the humanity of the Vietnamese people, the people of Cu Chi even during the time of bombs.
With that meaning, the creators of the film “Tunnel: Sun in the Dark” sent a message, also a reminder to the young generation that if they want to succeed in the future, they need to learn from the past, because this is something that many young people are gradually forgetting, even “losing” - losing the value of history.
Therefore, through the film's truthful reflection, the creators of the special historical war film about the steel land of Cu Chi hope that young people will spread the meaning of the film, as well as the true value of revolutionary history to a wider audience, so that each person will become an ambassador of history./.
