Mountain youth pioneers start-up business from raising bamboo rats

After graduating from the University of Finance and Accounting, young man Bui Van Tu returned to his hometown to participate in the Youth Union and youth movement. In addition to completing the tasks assigned by the locality, he learned a low-risk, low-investment livestock farming model that is suitable for the potential advantages of the locality.

After many times of researching and learning from many different models, he realized that raising bamboo rats has many advantages such as less care, the main food sources are available such as bamboo roots, reeds, sugarcane, corn... With an initial investment capital of more than 20 million VND, he tested raising 6 pairs of parent bamboo rats. Once he had mastered the technique, at the end of 2023, he boldly invested more than 300 million VND to build a barn system, ensuring coolness in the summer and warmth in the winter. From a few initial pairs of parent bamboo rats, his farm now has 20 pairs of bamboo rats and 60 pairs of peach-cheeked bamboo rats. Currently, he regularly supplies bamboo rats for breeding and commercial bamboo rats to the market in and outside the province, with prices ranging from 600,000 to 700,000 VND/kg, thanks to which in 2024, Mr. Tu earned a profit of more than 200 million VND.

Talking to us, Mr. Tu said that in the coming time, as the head of the Youth Economic Development Club, he will actively spend time providing technical assistance, creating conditions for the youth in the Club to participate in developing models of raising bamboo rats, goats, chickens and honey bees on forest hills, in order to exploit strengths to develop the local economy.

Evaluating Mr. Bui Van Tu, Secretary of the Commune Youth Union, Mr. Bui Van Long, Chairman of the People's Committee of Thanh An Commune added: "Tu is a Youth Union cadre who always actively carries out the Youth Union and youth movements of the commune. He is always evaluated by the Commune Party Committee as having completed his tasks well. Besides, he has boldly applied technical advances to his own and his family's production model. From there, it serves as a basis for propaganda, mobilization, and dissemination to dozens of local youth union members to develop family economy.

With Mr. Bui Van Tu's model, it not only helps him increase his income and get rich right in his hometown, but also opens up economic development opportunities for many young people in mountainous areas.
