Starting a business from Koi fish hobby

After graduating from a university of foreign languages, Mr. Ho Ngoc Sang used to work at a tourism corporation in Da Nang with a good salary. Things were going smoothly when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the tourism company closed, and he returned to his hometown to live with his family.

During this time, he became interested in Japanese Koi fish and his passion grew stronger and stronger. From raising some fish in small tanks for fun, Mr. Sang began to select beautiful fish to interact and exchange experiences with groups with the same passion and interests. Gradually, he was fascinated and began to professionally raise Koi fish.

From a few tens of millions of dong in the beginning, Mr. Sang gradually built up a Koi fish herd with hundreds of fish. He invested in a circulating filter tank to raise imported Koi fish from the juvenile stage to adulthood and sell them to partners in need.

While many people follow the direction of raising hybrid Koi, or self-breeding and raising them domestically to diversify the consumption market, Mr. Sang imports and raises purebred Japanese Koi. He specializes in importing and raising high-end lines such as Kohaku, Showa, Sanke, Karashi, Matsuba, Benigoi...

For him, purebred fish are expensive and require a lot of capital, but when they are raised, they are worth it. Each imported purebred fish costs several million VND (young fish). Mr. Sang raises them for about 3-5 months and can sell them for 8-10 million VND. In particular, extremely beautiful fish have extremely high prices.

The market for Koi fish is quite large, from North to South, many large restaurants, cafes, and well-off families with large gardens raise Koi fish...

Determined to raise Koi fish for the entertainment market, Mr. Sang imported many beautiful, strange, and standard-shaped Koi fish to raise and domesticate. He raised many different batches of fish, ensuring that at any time there were fish with all the colors and sizes the market needed.

Open business direction

Koi farming and trading are highly profitable, but not easy. Mr. Sang himself paid a high price when he lost his entire fish because he was a newbie.

But now, he can pass on his experience and breeding techniques to newcomers; can advise on the design and construction of complete Koi fish pond systems and provide standard breeds to those in need.

Mr. Sang believes that when you have experience and technical knowledge, raising Koi fish is not difficult. You just need to treat the water source well, have a suitable tank temperature, have standard quality fish fry, and always monitor and take care of the fish every day.

“Young people who want to start a business selling Koi fish must understand the habits and characteristics of this fish species. They must choose standard breeds, strictly adhere to the water environment cleanliness index, the depth of the pond, and must equip a modern, standard, dust-free water filtration system…” - Mr. Sang shared.

According to Mr. Sang, the factors that make a beautiful fish are, first of all, good, purebred genes; beautiful, plump, well-proportioned body shape; fresh, sharp colors, clear details; beautiful, well-proportioned veins, scales, and fins... Fish hobbyists often collect beautiful, unique fish, with many different lines to diversify their collections.

Japanese Koi fish are considered the "national fish" of the "land of the rising sun", a precious fish that is very popular with Vietnamese people. Despite the many fluctuations in the market economy, Mr. Sang still strives to stabilize and balance the economic equation to keep the passion alive. Every year, Mr. Sang sells about 1,000 large and small Koi fish, earning a profit of several hundred million VND.
