At the 2023 Binh Thuan Province Creative Youth Festival held at the end of September 2023, once again the name Nguyen Huu Nhon (born in 1992, Vo Xu town, Duc Linh district) was honored. He is a member who just won first prize in the 4th Binh Thuan Province Startup Idea Competition in 2023 with the project "Raising black apple snails combined with friendly agricultural tourism".
Successful start-up from black snail farming
Not long ago, I had the opportunity to visit and experience the snail farm combined with agricultural tourism of young man Nguyen Huu Nhon in Vo Xu land. At that time, the image of the snail farm owner was a young farmer in protective clothing, drenched in sweat, wading through mud, working hard in the pond... But this time, before my eyes was a neat young man in the green shirt of youth. In addition to his role as an excellent farmer, snail farm owner, and outstanding young man, he is now also a successful businessman. That is the result of more than 5 years of effort, up to now, Mr. Nhon's family has built a system of 5 apple snail farms with a total area of nearly 20 hectares. At the same time, they produce and trade in high-tech agricultural products such as cordyceps, lingzhi mushrooms and green asparagus. Notably, this young man is currently cooperating with local farmers to purchase 100% of the output of green asparagus, achieving a yield of nearly 50 tons/year...
Clearly stating his startup idea, Mr. Nhon said that the black snail farming model has low investment capital, easy farming techniques, while the market potential is still very empty. The facilities are to renovate the currently vacant ponds in the direction of restoring the natural environment, feeding vegetables and fruits such as squash, pumpkin, luffa, duckweed, water fern... so the cost of food is very low. According to the farm owner's calculations, with a capital of 3 million VND, about 10,000 baby snails (300 VND/snail) can be bought. The farming process is from 4 to 6 months (raising density of 1,000 -1,500 snails/ m3 ), the snails will reach 40 snails/kg or larger at 20 - 25 snails/kg, the output is about 200 kg. With the current wholesale price of commercial snails at 70,000 VND/kg, farmers can earn 13 million VND in revenue, after deducting costs, they can earn a profit of 7-10 million VND. Products from black apple snails include fresh snails, smoked snails, medicinal black apple snail patties, creating products that meet customer needs and improve human health.
Understanding that every success has challenges and motivation to overcome difficulties. As for Mr. Nhon himself, although he graduated with a bachelor's degree in law and two other university degrees with the opportunity to get rich in the city, he chose to return to his hometown to start a business, with the wish to both support the family economy and contribute to building his hometown. He is determined to seek and learn from experience, access science and technology through mass media. On the other hand, he actively learns from similar models of union members and young people starting agricultural businesses in and outside the province to apply to himself.
Developing experiential agricultural tourism
Realizing the potential of natural conditions, market and abundant labor resources in his hometown, Mr. Nhon has built an agricultural tourism model with an area of nearly 5 hectares right at the snail farm in Vo Xu town. When coming here, visitors will experience and relax in a setting close to nature. Visitors can also enjoy nutritious dishes made from lingzhi mushrooms, cordyceps and other medicinal dishes.
According to young man Nguyen Huu Nhon, this project is the starting point, pioneering the change from an agricultural economy to tourism, commercial services based on the existing agriculture. When put into operation, it will create stable jobs for more than 50 local workers. In addition to taking care of his family's production and business, he is also very active in consulting on the transfer of high-tech snail farming models to youth union members and people in the area.
Regarding the upcoming orientation, to promote local products, the owner of this farm is implementing a program to support the introduction of OCOP products into tourism consumption. On the other hand, developing rural tourism products associated with target markets. Along with that, exploiting the advantages, unique and outstanding values of agriculture and rural areas, contributing to preserving and promoting traditional cultural values, building new rural areas.
With the passion and aspirations of youth, young man Nguyen Huu Nhon has successfully started a business from raising black apple snails and experiential agricultural tourism. He received the Luong Dinh Cua award from the Central Youth Union in 2022. In 2023, he was honored with the title of Advanced Youth Following Uncle Ho's Teachings nationwide; currently the Deputy Head of the Luong Dinh Cua network; A typical example in studying and doing good business awarded by the Chairman of Binh Thuan Provincial People's Committee; A typical example of being commended and honored as an advanced model nationwide organized by the Central Emulation Council and many other honorable awards... This is the motivation and also the stepping stone for young people like Mr. Nhon to be determined to start a successful business right in his hometown of Binh Thuan.
