Thanh Hoa Son converts production towards climate change adaptation

Việt NamViệt Nam16/04/2025

Ms. Thach Thi Sa Mane (standing in the middle) excitedly talks about the successful peanut crop thanks to appropriate farming conversion in climate change conditions.

Comrade Chau Ngoc Que, Vice Chairman of Thanh Hoa Son Commune People's Committee, said: In recent years, the source of fresh water for agricultural production has encountered many difficulties; there is often a lack of water and drought from February to June every year; especially for the areas of rice cultivation in the third crop (winter-spring crop) at the end of the crop, there is often difficulty in water sources. Based on the above reality, the locality has gradually invested in dredging the intra-field canal system and planning the dry season crop production area, not producing rice in the third crop in the two hamlets of Lac Hoa and Cau Vi; for hamlets with conditions and near the main canal for rice production in the third crop in Lac Son, Lac Thanh A...

Every year, farmers in Thanh Hoa Son commune plant about 1,900 hectares of various crops and over 1,000 hectares of rice; of which, dry season crops account for over 80% of the area and the third crop of rice accounts for about 500 - 700 hectares. In the first 3 months of 2025, farmers in the commune planted nearly 500 hectares of dry season crops. Thanks to proactively implementing tasks and solutions to adapt to production conditions before climate change, households producing crops and rice in Thanh Hoa Son achieved very positive results.

Mr. Nguyen Van Thang, Lac Hoa hamlet said: his family has 0.4ha of land to produce 02 rice crops + 01 dry season crop. This year's crop alone, the family grows 0.3ha of chili and 0.1ha of tomato. Due to the drought and difficulty in irrigation water, the family has stored water by digging ponds and lining them with tarpaulin (containing about 400 - 500m3 of water) to irrigate crops. At this time, it is very difficult to produce the third rice crop in this field due to insufficient water. The dry season crop is currently selling at a quite high price, with an average income of more than 25 million VND/ 1,000m2 .

Ms. Thach Thi Sa Mane, also living in Lac Hoa hamlet, happily said: This year's traditional Chol Chnam Thmay festival, the family is very happy and has better preparation, thanks to the family's business being quite favorable, producing 0.5 hectares of crops (of which, 0.4 hectares are peanuts and 0.1 hectares are chili), the price of peanuts is 16,000 VND/kg and achieving a yield of 10 tons/ha, profit of more than 100 million VND/ha; and the price of chili is also quite high, ranging from 30,000 - 50,000 VND/kg, the family earns more than 250 million VND/ha of chili.

Also according to Ms. Thach Thi Sa Mane, in 2023, her family received support from the Norwegian Climate Change Prevention and Response Project (NMA-V) to grow crops to invest in buying pumps, energy-saving irrigation pipes, etc. Therefore, through the conversion to dry season crop production, the family also benefited, and the economic efficiency was quite high and stable.

To continue improving the capacity to adapt to climate change, in 2025, Thanh Hoa Son commune has implemented dredging of 07 intra-field canals in Lac Hoa, Lac Son and Cau Vi hamlets; built a livelihood model of raising chickens with biological litter in Lac Son hamlet from the NMA-V project capital. Tra Vinh Irrigation Works Management and Exploitation Company Limited has implemented the repair of Lac Hoa sluice to ensure the prevention of saltwater leakage through the sluice, serving the production in the dry season of people in Lac Hoa, Cau Vi, Lac Son fields...
