The owner of social media platform X (formerly Twitter) recently shared a video of himself on the platform with the message "university education is overrated," according to Wionews on October 20.

In the video, Mr. Musk said that the value of traditional university education is gradually decreasing.

Practical skills are more important

This was part of billionaire Musk's speech at an event held to support Republican presidential candidate - former US President Donald Trump in Philadelphia (USA) on October 17.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Musk said that many people spend 4 years in college only to be burdened with student debt after graduation, but are not equipped with any practical and useful skills.

Although he has a bachelor's degree in physics and economics, Musk believes that an individual does not need a four-year bachelor's degree to be successful.

Instead, the Tesla founder believes that practical skills are more important. Musk has emphasized that jobs that require practical experience, such as electricians, plumbers, and carpenters, are more important in advancing a person’s career than academic qualifications.

“I have a lot of respect for skilled workers,” Musk said. “We need electricians, plumbers, carpenters, and that’s much more important than the growing number of people majoring in political science.”

"I think we need to change the mindset that to be successful, you have to spend four years getting a college degree. That's just not true," Musk added.

Elon Musk opposes traditional education

This is not the first time billionaire Musk has spoken out against traditional university education.

In 2019, he announced that employees without a college degree could work at his car company Tesla.

In a speech at the 2020 satellite technology conference in the US, Mr. Musk said: "You don't need to go to university to learn everything. Basically, everything is available and free."

He added that university education is necessary to equip students with social experience, but it is not the only way to gain knowledge.

“I think college is basically for fun and proving that you can do your homework. But college is not a place to learn,” Musk said at the time.
