Coach Luis Enrique confirmed that PSG will play offensively in the second leg. |
Despite controlling most of the game in the first half, PSG unexpectedly fell behind in the 35th minute after a sharp combination from Aston Villa, ending with an accurate finish from Morgan Rogers.
However, the Paris team quickly responded. Just four minutes later, young talent Desire Doue created a masterpiece from long range, defeating goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, bringing the match back to the starting line.
After the break, PSG continued to increase the attacking tempo. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scored to make it 2-1 in the 49th minute, before Nuno Mendes sealed the 3-1 victory with a goal in stoppage time.
“The goal in the last minute was a worthy reward for what we showed throughout the 90 minutes,” coach Luis Enrique shared after the match.
Despite having a two-goal advantage, coach Enrique affirmed that PSG will not play with a perfectionist mindset in the second leg at Villa Park.
“We don’t know how to play holding. I’ve never done that at any club, and certainly not at PSG,” he stressed. “If we want to reach the semi-finals, we have to fight to win. There will be more space than in the first leg, and we will take advantage of it.”
The Spanish coach appreciates PSG's speed and transition ability, which could make the difference when Aston Villa are forced to push their squad higher in the second leg.
“It will be an attractive and difficult match - I have no doubt about that. But the word 'calculation' is not in our dictionary,” coach Enrique affirmed.
PSG's rising star Desire Doue continued his impressive form with his fourth goal in his last four games. The 19-year-old has now scored eight goals and provided five assists in his last 12 games in all competitions.
“We will keep our focus and determination high for the second leg,” said Doue. “PSG’s goal is always to win.”
