The longest escalator in China, the second longest in Asia, in Chongqing.
Built on a mountain, the city of Chongqing in southwestern China has some unique transportation designs. One of them is a 112-meter-long escalator, equivalent to a 31-story building, connecting two intersections.
This is the longest escalator in China and the second longest in Asia, named the Crown (Huangguan), consisting of three escalators: the up escalator, the down escalator and the backup escalator. The maximum carrying capacity of each escalator is 13,000 passengers/hour.
With a 30-degree slope, this escalator is not for those with a fear of heights. People here will have to buy tickets to ride the escalator instead of climbing the mountain, at a cost of 2 yuan (nearly 7,000 VND) for one trip up or down. It will take passengers about 2 minutes and 30 seconds to complete one trip.
The escalator was put into use in 1996. In March 2023, it had about 6,700 daily trips. It is a testament to how Chongqing has adapted to mountain life.
