Last month of selling the old version, Camry is still the most popular in the D-class sedan segment

Báo Dân tríBáo Dân trí19/11/2024

(Dan Tri) - Camry sales dropped in October due to waiting for an upgrade, Mazda6 followed closely, but since the beginning of the year, Toyota's model is still far ahead of its competitors in the same segment.

Contrary to the growth trend of the entire market, the D-class sedan segment in October witnessed a decline in sales of many products, except for the Kia K5. However, the rankings of competing models remained unchanged compared to the previous month.

The most popular model in this group continues to be Camry with 76 units delivered, down nearly 30% compared to September. Experts explain that Toyota's sales have decreased partly due to the model being in the waiting period for an upgrade. The all-new Camry was introduced by the Japanese company at the Vietnam Motor Show (VMS) 2024 held at the end of October.

Before being upgraded, Toyota Camry was the most expensive car model in the D-class sedan segment (VND1.105-1.495 billion) but still led in consumption in this group of cars (Photo: Tung Hoang).

Mazda6 is still in second place with sales of 74 cars, almost surpassing Toyota Camry. Compared to September, Mazda's consumption decreased by nearly 16%.

The last two positions belong to Kia K5 and Honda Accord respectively. Of which, K5 sales increased by 85%, reaching 37 cars but still could not escape the list of 10 slowest selling products in the whole market.

Honda Accord is the worst-selling car model on the market. Compared to September, the sales of this model have decreased by half, with only 4 cars sold despite the distributor continuing to directly discount 220 million VND. The price of this Japanese brand's D-class sedan has been reduced from 1.319 billion VND to 1.099 billion VND.

In the context of Vietnamese people's taste leaning towards high-chassis cars, the D-class sedan segment has little "playing ground" in Vietnam, although there are two products with accessible prices: Mazda6 (769-899 million VND) and Kia K5 (859-999 million VND). This group of cars also has MG7 with prices starting from 738 million VND but sales figures have not been announced. According to the sales consultant, this MG sedan model has not been successful.

Toyota Camry 2024 continues to be imported completely from Thailand. The car has only 3 versions instead of 4 like the old generation, with the same starting list price of 1.22 billion and the highest up to 1.53 billion VND (Photo: Nguyen Lam).

In the new generation, Toyota Camry has only 3 versions instead of 4 as before. Of which, the gasoline engine variants are almost all cut, only keeping the 2.0Q version as the new standard version, the price remains unchanged.

The remaining two versions are both hybrids, using a 2.5L engine combined with an electric motor, an e-CVT gearbox and front-wheel drive. This configuration produces a total capacity of 225 horsepower and a maximum torque of 221Nm.

Toyota says the new Camry is equipped with a fifth-generation hybrid system with some improvements in fuel consumption. In addition, the car's battery pack has been switched to a lithium type, which is smaller in size, lighter in weight and has a higher capacity than the old Ni-MH battery.

Thus, in the new generation, Toyota Camry continues to be the most expensive product in the D-class sedan segment. The selling price of the Japanese car is even more expensive than some "hot" D-class crossover models such as Ford Everest (1.099-1.545 billion VND) or Hyundai Santa Fe (1.069-1.365 billion VND).

This change may not affect the consumption of Toyota Camry too much, according to experts. The reason is that in the new generation, this car model still retains the 2.0Q version (1.22 billion VND) and according to sales consultants, Vietnamese customers tend to buy this variant quite a lot in old cars.

Of course, to be able to evaluate the appeal of Camry in the most realistic and objective way, we will need to wait for the sales results of November, when this model has started to "hit the shelves".
