Phu Tho Hoa Tunnels (Tan Phu District, Ho Chi Minh City) is one of the first tunnels in the Southern region. The tunnels were once over 10km long and were dug by soldiers in 1947 as a revolutionary base to serve the resistance against France and the US. Located in an area of over 4,000m2 at the Phu Tho Hoa Tunnels historical site, this place was certified as a National Historical - Cultural Relic in 1996. In the photo is a model of the Phu Tho Hoa tunnel system. The tunnel has many branches leading to different directions. The length of the terrain and features of the tunnel is more than 10km, has 2 floors, is dug 3 - 4m deep underground, 0.8m wide. Each tunnel section is designed with ventilation holes leading from the ground down, camouflaged by termite mounds. Currently, about 100m of the tunnel has been restored, upgraded, and opened to visitors for free. However, due to some sections being waterlogged, the Relic Management Board is restricting visitors from entering the tunnel. The original tunnel entrances were well-camouflaged in mounds of earth or dense bushes, just wide enough for one person to crawl through. Today, the tunnel entrances have been restored with cement and wooden covers for visitors. Because there is no light inside the tunnels, visitors must bring a flashlight when visiting.
The path leading down to the underground tunnel is 3 - 4m deep. Mr. Do Hoang Hai, tour guide of Phu Tho Hoa relic site, said: "The unique point of this tunnel is that it was dug in the shape of undulating waves, every 20m section there is a partition, in the middle there is a hole with a diameter of 0.5m, an adult wants to pass through must crawl or lie down". Outside the Phu Tho Hoa Tunnels Historical Relic Site, many human statues are displayed, recreating the trench fighting scenes of the Southern guerrillas.
Uyen Nhi and Hong Ngoc (Tan Phu district) said that this was the first time they knew about Phu Tho Hoa tunnels even though they were quite close to where they lived. "After watching the movie Tunnels, I was very curious and wanted to experience the real space of the tunnels. The tunnels are very small, hot and difficult to move around. I really admire our ancestors' generation," Uyen Nhi said. The Western soldiers used hunting dogs to hunt down and destroy countless of our cadres.
The Phu Tho Hoa tunnel digging tools are displayed here. During the two resistance wars against the French colonialists and the American imperialists, the tunnel was a shelter and hiding place for many armed units of the city and the army and people of Go Vap district, Tan Binh district, now Tan Phu district. Phu Tho Hoa tunnel is one of the first unique and creative underground military architectural works of our army and people in the Southeast region.
