(CLO) Thailand and Georgia said they are investigating a ring that trafficked eggs from Thai women brought to the South Caucasus country.

Georgia's Interior Ministry said on Thursday it had repatriated three Thai women identified as victims in the horrific ring. It said four foreign nationals had been questioned as part of the investigation.

Surapan Thaiprasert, commander of the Royal Thai Police’s Foreign Affairs Bureau, said Friday that Thai authorities were also investigating the case. One of the alleged victims spoke at a news conference in Thailand this week without revealing his name and wearing a mask.

She said she came across an advertisement on social media for surrogate mothers who would live with the family and be paid 25,000 baht (nearly $743) a month. After agreeing, she said, she was taken to Georgia, via Dubai and Armenia, where two Chinese nationals escorted her to a house.

“They took us to a house with about 60 to 70 Thai women,” she said. “The women there told us there was no (surrogacy) contract or parents.”

These women, she said, "will be given injections for treatment, anaesthesia and their eggs will be retrieved by machine. After we received this information and it was not like the advertisement, we were very scared, we tried to contact people back home".

The women at the press conference said they had pretended to be sick to appear weak in order to avoid having their eggs harvested. They also said their passports had been taken and their captors had told them they risked arrest in Thailand if they returned home.

Pavena Hongsakul Foundation for Children and Women, a Thailand-based NGO that helped the three women return, said it estimates that about 100 trafficked women remain in Georgia.
