Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool said revenue from the Songkran holiday from April 12-16 is estimated to increase by 49% compared to the same period last year.
The Thai government expects to earn more than 15 billion baht (over 400 million USD) from 4.3 million domestic trips and nearly 9 billion baht (200 million USD) from more than 500,000 international visitors participating in the 2024 Maha Songkran World Water Festival.
The Thai government has spent 130 million baht (3.6 million USD) for relevant ministries and agencies to coordinate in promoting the organization of this Festival in all provinces and cities across the country.
Tourism and Sports Minister Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol said the 2024 Maha Songkran World Water Festival will feature 20 special parades, depicting Thai culture from all regions across the country.
As of March 10, Thailand had welcomed 7.4 million foreign visitors, earning 359 billion baht (over 10 billion USD). China remained Thailand's largest international tourist market with 1.36 million visitors, followed by Malaysia with nearly 1 million visitors and Russia with about 500,000 visitors.
According to Ms. Sudawan, this result was achieved thanks to visa exemption programs applied to China, India, Taiwan (China) and Kazakhstan, airfare discounts during the festive period, and the resumption of many international flights.
