Of the 4 million international arrivals to Thailand during the Lunar New Year, the largest number of Chinese visitors was over 770,000, from January 24 to February 2. The number of arrivals to Bangkok at Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports accounted for nearly 3 million, with a total of nearly 12,000 flights, an increase of more than 14% compared to the 2024 Lunar New Year.
Popular destinations such as Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Pattaya and Phuket have many activities to serve tourists during Tet such as vibrant festivals, dragon dance parades and art performances.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) also cooperates with local authorities and businesses to organize events such as lantern festivals and opera performances. Many markets remain open during this time and sell food and souvenirs. Hotel owners and travel agencies launch many promotional programs with discounted packages for accommodation, food, and cultural tours.
The Lunar New Year marks a pivotal moment for Thailand’s tourism industry post-Covid-19. With a surge in visitors and vibrant festivals across the country, this year’s festival is seen as a significant boost to the tourism industry as well as the local economy.
Sasikarn Watthanachan, deputy government spokesman, said six airports managed by the Airports Authority of Thailand (AoT), have been instructed to prepare for the influx of visitors. Major airports in Thailand have recruited more multilingual staff, extended working hours to better serve passengers during the Lunar New Year holiday, and regularly inspected international aviation safety standards to prevent incidents.
Colonel Worasak Phisitbunnakorn, acting commander of the Royal Thai Police Public Affairs Division, said the Tourist Police Bureau has been ordered to increase patrols to ensure the safety of tourists. Other units such as the drug suppression squad are on high alert.
According to Agoda , one of the main reasons tourists flock here during the New Year is because this country is a convenient, safe destination with many attractions and festivals. Transportation is also a plus for tourists in Thailand. Bangkok is the most searched and booked destination during the New Year, with a 70% increase compared to last year, followed by the two provinces of Chon Buri and Chiang Mai.
Wang Lin, 20, from Shanghai, said 2025 would be his fifth year in Thailand for the Lunar New Year. Warm weather and famous cuisine are what attracted Lin to come here.
This year, Thailand aims to welcome 39 million international visitors, nearly the same as before the pandemic. Tourism revenue is expected to be around one billion USD.
