The affected areas are residential areas located outside the flood barriers along the Chao Phraya River in the provinces of Uthai Thani, Chai Nat, Sing Buri, Ang Thong, Ayutthaya, Suphanburi, Lopburi, Pathum Thani, Nonthaburi, Samut Prakan and Bangkok.
On September 26, the Royal Thai Irrigation Department announced that it would gradually increase the dam's water discharge rate above the current level of 1,498 cubic meters per second due to continuous heavy rainfall and inflow from the north.
The adjustments will be made in stages but limited to 2,000 m3/second. This will raise the water levels of the Phong Pheng Canal in Ang Thong province, the Bang Ban Canal and the Noi River in Ayutthaya province by 1-1.5m.
The report added that rising water levels could also cause canals and tributaries branching off from these waterways to overflow.
As of 7:00 AM on September 26th, the water level at station C2 in Muang district of Nakhon Sawan province had risen by 21cm compared to the previous day, but was still 3.29m below the bank. The flow rate at this station was 1,846 m3/second.
At station C3, or the Chao Phraya Dam, in Chai Nat province, the water level rose slightly but remained 3.52m below the shore. The flow rate at the station was 1,498 m3/second.
Nation TV reported on September 26th that flooding from the Ping River in Mueang District, Chiang Mai, was even worse than in 2011.
The Ping River in Meuang District, Chiang Mai, flooded many residential and commercial areas on the night of September 25th, including San Pa Khoi Market, Charoen Prathet neighborhoods, and the Night Bazaar.
At least 2,000 households are expected to be affected by the flooding, particularly those in and around the night market, where water levels have exceeded 1 meter.
Street vendors struggled to keep their goods from being submerged in water, while small vehicles were unable to navigate the stretch of road from Nong Hoi to Nawarat Bridge.
