Writer Thao Trang (4th from left) at the exchange at Ho Chi Minh City Book Street on March 30. |
Thao Trang - author of many horror works with strong folk identity, completed part 2 of Tet in Hell Village after the success of the first episode (adapted into a 12-episode series of the same name in 2023) as well as the work Soul Eater (also adapted into a movie released in 2023).
In part 2 of U hon tuong dat with more than 530 pages, Thao Trang continues to delve deeply into spirituality, beliefs and stories from village and community memories. The plot is upgraded to a horror level, with many hidden meanings behind power conspiracies, secret trade wars, and evil appearing everywhere, threatening ordinary people.
The main character Hai Dong is a young man who has been abandoned in life, but he chooses to stand up and fight for justice, together with the villagers to break the foreign siege, and protect the spirit of the country. The work has a passage: "Even if the rivers dry up and the mountains wear away, even if we have to go through many lives, as long as this nation survives, that day the South will still have heroes. Hai Dong firmly believes that. He tightly grips the bamboo stick in his hand, looking up at the sky on the first day of the new year."
The new part of Tet in Hell Village contains stories of melancholy love, fate and even “wandering souls” that create emotions for readers who love to explore the fantasy literary genre. At the same time, the story is also an attractive material for the Vietnamese horror film genre with both traditional and modern characteristics, uniqueness that film director Tran Huu Tan is pursuing.
