This Tet, come to Ba Ria-Vung Tau to see the "cherry blossoms" in full bloom

For nearly two weeks, the azalea trees on many roads have begun to bloom. Because the flowers bloom near the Lunar New Year, the color of the flowers is somewhat similar to cherry blossoms, so many people still compare the azalea season in Ba Ria-Vung Tau to the "cherry blossom season of the sea".

The last days of the year when the weather in the South starts to get cold is also the time when the first clusters of Do Mai flowers bloom, signaling the arrival of spring. Our group of friends made a weekend date to travel along the coastal routes from Vung Tau to Long Hai, passing Ho Tram just to see Do Mai and take pictures with this flower that only blooms once a year.

Along the coastal roads of Vung Tau city from Thuy Van to Quang Trung, there are do mai flowers everywhere, but the most are on the cliffs of Tran Phu street and Nghinh Phong cape park. Do mai flowers are planted precariously on the mountainside or along Bai Sau beach. In the dry season, do mai trees are quite barren but have strong vitality, can withstand the sun and sea breeze. Every spring, do mai trees seem to give up all their vitality to the blooming flower clusters.

At Nghinh Phong Cape, the park area is not large but most of this area is surrounded by azalea forests. Perhaps those who love flowers and photography cannot ignore this place every spring. Although the last days of the year are busy with work, on weekends, under the azalea trees, you can still see girls and women wearing ao dai and floral skirts taking pictures with azaleas.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thom (583 Truong Cong Dinh, Vung Tau city) said, “The do mai flower is exactly like the cherry blossom. Instead of traveling somewhere far away to see the cherry blossoms, every year we organize a tour around Ba Ria-Vung Tau to see the cherry blossoms of the coastal land. Perhaps, the blooming time of this flower is not long, only about 1.5-2 months, so if you want to have beautiful pictures and see the flowers, you have to arrange your time to go right away.”

Mountain climbers are also stunned by the color of the azalea flowers in Vung Tau.

Do mai flowers bloom not only along the coastal route but also along the routes up to Big Mountain and Small Mountain. Mr. Le Dinh Thao, a runner, said that he often runs on mountain routes. Each season, Vung Tau's mountains and forests have their own beauty that makes running enthusiasts like him very interested in exploring. "But at the end of the year, this season, Vung Tau not only has a beautiful climate but along the running route on the mountains and through the forest, there are also many do mai flowers blooming, making me fascinated," said Mr. Thao.

Leaving Vung Tau city, our group of friends continued to wander along the coastal roads of Long Hai and Ho Tram. In the pleasant weather of the last days of the year, along both sides of the coastal road, the do mai flowers bloomed with two colors: white and light pink. Do mai flowers bloom in each region, from December to around February, close to the Lunar New Year, so they are also considered spring flowers like peach blossoms and apricot blossoms. The flowers grow in clusters in the leaf axils, are light pink or white, and have the shape of a chopstick flower. The calyx is bell-shaped and has many red spots, the lobes are serrated, and the corolla resembles the shape of a bird's wings fluttering in the wind.

Ms. Le Thi Nga, President of the Ornamental Plants Association of Ba Ria-Vung Tau province, said that the do mai tree is not only a wild plant planted along the roadside, but it also has the ability to improve the soil and fix nitrogen significantly for the soil. The wood of the do mai tree has beautiful grain, fine and durable fibers, and is also used to make interior decoration items.

In addition, this type of wood is also used in construction, agricultural tools and railway sleepers. In many Western countries, the tree is planted as a green space to prevent fire, wind and shade many agricultural crops such as coffee, tea, cocoa. In Vietnam, the tree is planted sporadically in the provinces of Dak Lak, Khanh Hoa, Dong Nai and Ba Ria-Vung Tau, which are considered the localities with the most do mai flowers.

Along with the development of local tourism, do mai flowers are planted by local tourist establishments and become a seasonal tourism product. Do mai flowers are currently grown in large quantities in Thuy Duong and Seava Ho Tram tourist areas...

Every year, during the blooming season of the apricot blossoms, tourist areas often have additional activities such as taking tourists to see the flowers by electric car, combined with taking souvenir photos. This type of service is popular with many tourists.

The most is probably the do mai flower route from Deo Nuoc Ngọt to Phuoc Hai town (Long Dat district). Do mai trees grow naturally in rows along the roadside, and local people uprooted and planted more trees in the empty spaces, forming the do mai flower road as it is now. Each do mai tree on this route is about 2-3m apart, 4-7m high, the trunk has a diameter of 10-30cm, and has many branches. Do mai flowers usually grow in the leaf axils along the branches, densely packed from the tip of the branch to the top.

During the blooming season, the leaves will fall off to make room for the flowers to bloom. The petals are usually dark at the tip, fading towards the inside, and have two main colors: pure white and light pink.

Coming to Ba Ria-Vung Tau this season, visitors can see cherry blossoms all over the streets. However, one of the most special places to see cherry blossoms in Vung Tau that cannot be missed is Con Heo Hill or Ho May tourist area (Vung Tau city); Long Hai coastal road, Minh Dam mountain (Long Dat district); Ho Tram coastal road (Xuyen Moc district).
