The Labor Code stipulates that New Year's Day is a one-day holiday. Since January 1, 2024 falls on a Monday, and combined with the two weekend days, employees will have three consecutive days off.

After more than a month off for the New Year's Day holiday, workers will have time off for the Lunar New Year. The Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs is proposing a 7-day holiday and has put forward two options for consideration by relevant ministries and agencies before submitting them to the Government.

Option 1: Civil servants and public employees will be on leave from Thursday, February 8th to Wednesday, February 14th, 2024 (i.e., from the 29th day of the 12th lunar month of the Year of the Rabbit to the 5th day of the 1st lunar month of the Year of the Dragon).

Under this plan, civil servants and public employees will have 7 days off (including 5 days for the Lunar New Year and 2 days off to compensate for weekly days off).

Workers are entitled to 3 days off for the New Year's Day holiday.

Option 2: The Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs proposes a holiday of one day before Tet and four days after Tet. Accordingly, civil servants and public employees would be on holiday from Friday, February 9th to Thursday, February 15th, 2024 (i.e., from the 30th day of the 12th lunar month of the Year of the Rabbit to the 6th day of the 1st lunar month of the Year of the Dragon).

Under the second option, civil servants and public employees will also have 7 days off for the Lunar New Year (including 5 days of Lunar New Year holiday and 2 days of compensatory leave for weekly days off).

According to the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, both options have the same number of days off, but the ministry proposes choosing option 1 because it ensures a balance between the time off before and after the holiday.

The Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs stated that, based on actual conditions and the holiday schedule applicable to civil servants and public employees, employers will arrange the Lunar New Year holiday schedule.

The government encourages businesses to adopt the same holiday schedules for employees as they do for civil servants.
