Ukraine's homemade missile can reach Moscow

(CLO) Ukraine has developed a low-cost cruise missile called Trembita, which can fly at low altitudes to avoid missile defense systems. An improved version of this missile can achieve a longer range, even reaching Moscow, according to information from The Economist.

The Trembita is a new cruise missile developed by Ukraine, capable of flying at low altitudes to avoid Russian air defense systems. It is built on old German technology from World War II, using a pulse jet engine first used in the German V-1 bomb.

The Economist said Trembita's engine was very low cost, around $200, and the engine tube was described as "rudimentary but ready".

The Trembita missile can fly at speeds of up to 402 km/h and has a range of about 200 km, and can be adapted to suit different targets. A more powerful version of the Trembita is being developed with a longer range, capable of reaching Moscow.

In particular, this missile version is very cheap, only about 3,000 USD for a decoy missile and 15,000 USD for a fully equipped version, much cheaper than similar weapons from the West.

The missile's chief developer, Serhiy Biryukov, asserted that the Trembita missile can fly at such low altitudes that Russian air defense systems would have difficulty detecting and intercepting it.

Additionally, business journalist Oliver Carroll wrote on social media that the Trembita is cheap and has a distinctive “roaring” sound reminiscent of World War II weapons. Military expert Chuck Pfarrer also commented that the Trembita could be adapted for long-range ground attacks or to act as a decoy for enemy air defenses.

The Trembita missile could become a key part of Ukraine's defense strategy, as the country ramps up domestic production of weapons to reduce its dependence on Western supplies.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has asserted that Ukraine is stepping up production of domestic missiles as part of a strategy to achieve self-sufficiency in defense technology.

This is particularly important as Ukraine faces restrictions on long-range weapons from the West, and could also become important if President-elect Donald Trump reduces military support for Kiev when he takes office in January 2025.

Ukraine wants to be more self-sufficient in its own weapons, especially as hostilities with Russia continue to escalate. Developments like the Trembita could help Ukraine maintain a long-range strike capability and effectively counter threats.

Ukraine's missile program will become stronger in the coming years, Deputy Prime Minister Mykhailo Fedorov said, predicting that 2025 will be "the year of Ukrainian cruise missiles."

While the Trembita missile could provide Ukraine with a strategic advantage, its impact in the conflict may not be immediate. One security official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said it would likely take at least another year for the weapon to be mass-produced in sufficient numbers to put pressure on Russia.

In the meantime, peace talks could take place, and the US administration under President Donald Trump could push for a ceasefire. However, Biryukov stressed that any ceasefire would be temporary and would not affect Ukraine's plans to develop its own missiles. "Our missiles will continue to fly," he said.
