Techcombank brings Carmen to Hanoi, honoring French opera art

In less than a week, the masterpiece “Carmen” - Georges Bizet’s immortal opera will officially debut to the capital audience in a “one-of-a-kind” performance, restored in the original spirit of the first premiere in Paris exactly 150 years ago. Being the first country in Southeast Asia and the second Asian country to bring the original Carmen to the domestic art stage with thorough investment from preparation, personnel, techniques, orchestra to singing, Vietnam has affirmed its strong development capacity in organizing international-level academic art programs.

More than 70 tons of props and costumes were transported directly from France, along with a cast of 120 leading French opera artists appearing in Hanoi. The space of Ho Guom Theater was decorated with 12 thousand velvet roses. The show that Techcombank exclusively sponsored promises to be an international-class cultural gift for the public and customers.

The show was the result of extensive preparation and intense work over a long period of time by more than 120 artists, singers, and dancers from the French National Opera, and a team of leading directors, technicians, stage designers, and costume designers.

Director Romain Gilbert – who is “conducting” this play, shared his feelings in the days counting down to the performance: “My whole crew and I are very excited for the upcoming two nights of performance. We highly appreciate the opportunity to cooperate with you. Everyone is very professional and exceeded our expectations for an event of this scale – the first time held in Vietnam”.

Under the direction of a French director, the stage of Ho Guom Theater will recreate the space of the ancient city of Seville 150 years ago - where music , light and movement blend in a multi-layered space rich in visual depth.

Restored by the Royal Theatre of Versailles, the French Romantic Music Center Palazzetto Bru Zane and the Rouen Normandie Theatre, the play will take the audience through musical suites that are familiar to many Vietnamese audiences, many of whom may not know that these suites are excerpts from the classic opera Carmen.

Not only fully recreating the original spirit of Carmen from the Paris stage 150 years ago, Techcombank and the Organizing Committee continue to bring an artistic reception space, with the symbolic item of roses.

In the play, Carmen threw a rose at José as a provocation, and also as a catalyst for love between the two. Therefore, the Organizing Committee used thousands of velvet roses and decorative colors with red as the main color. Tens of thousands of imported roses - symbols of love, beauty and endless passion, were cleverly arranged, not only beautifying the entire theater area, but also helping guests "enter the role" and enter Carmen's world right from the reception hall.

Behind the spectacle are more than 70 tons of sets, props and costumes – many of which were reconstructed from original turn-of-the-century fabrics, or hand-recreated using lost materials and motifs.

All were selected by the French team and transported in their original packages to Vietnam, with the spirit of fully preserving the original value of the classic opera.

“With this play, we absolutely respect the original Carmen in the spirit of the first performance 150 years ago - that is, what artist Bizet introduced to the public in 1875 in the 19th century is fully and completely recreated on the contemporary stage.

This is an in-depth research project, requiring a close combination of history, logic and art. Most notably, all the props and everything were meticulously and delicately prepared by the French themselves," artist Nguyen Thanh Tung shared.
