AIS data and photos from ship tracking companies show the Carl Vinson carrier strike group passing through the Singapore Strait on the morning of April 4. Subsequent data shows the group moving north along the Strait of Malacca later that day.
Meanwhile, the Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of Japan issued a statement saying that the Shandong aircraft carrier group of the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) returned to the East Sea on April 3.
According to the announcement, the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) dispatched the destroyer JS Onami (DD-111) to monitor the Chinese aircraft carrier group.
The Japanese Joint Chiefs of Staff also issued two notices on April 4. The first notice said that at 9:00 a.m. the same day, the PLAN destroyer CNS Nanjing (155) and frigate CNS Huanggang (577) were detected moving northwest in waters 56 miles northeast of Miyako Island, and then moved northwest in waters between Okinawa and Miyako Island to enter the East China Sea.
Meanwhile, a second announcement said that on the same afternoon, a Russian IL-20 electronic intelligence (ELINT) aircraft flew from mainland Russia, flew over the Sea of Japan and then flew over international waters off the coast of Kyogamisaki on the main island of Honshu.
It then changed course to the northwest to return to mainland Russia. In response, fighters from the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) Northern Air Defense Command and other commands were dispatched.
