A series of explosions occurred on a Russian cargo ship in the Mediterranean on December 23, causing the ship to sink, according to TASS on December 25, citing the ship's owner, who said the Russian ship was hit by a terrorist attack.
The Russian Foreign Ministry reported on December 24 that the Ursa Major cargo ship, built in 2009, sank after a series of explosions ripped through its engine room, leaving two of its 16 crew members missing.
TASS quoted an announcement from Oboronlogistika, the ship's owner and one of the companies carrying out military construction projects under the Russian Ministry of Defense, on December 25, saying that the ship had become the target of a terrorist attack.
According to Oboronlogistika, the remaining 14 sailors on board said there were three consecutive explosions on the starboard side of the ship at around 5:50 p.m. on December 23 (Vietnam time).
The ship began to list to one side due to water entering. At that time, the ship was carrying the prescribed load, which included 2 large cranes with cargo containers, 2 covers for icebreakers, and 129 empty containers.
Oboronlogistika said the ship was en route to the Russian Far Eastern port of Vladivostok at the time of the attack.
