According to statistics from the Vietnam Maritime Administration, in the 5-year period from 2019 to 2023, the volume of goods passing through Quy Nhon seaport tends to increase. Specifically, in 2019, the volume of goods passing through Quy Nhon seaport reached more than 8.8 million tons, and by 2023, the volume increased to more than 10 million tons. Along with that, the number of ships with larger tonnage announced entering and leaving the seaport also increased, from 204 ships in 2019 to 217 ships in 2023.

According to the assessment of the Vietnam Maritime Administration, Quy Nhon seaport currently has a wharf system that is qualified to receive ships with a tonnage larger than the design for safe entry and exit. Quy Nhon's maritime channel system is a short channel, has been upgraded and expanded, and is equipped with a maritime signaling system that meets the conditions for ships traveling 24/7. In addition, Quy Nhon Maritime Port Authority has been equipped with a VTS traffic management and coordination system, facilitating safety management in the entire area. In addition to the wharf system that is currently allowed to receive large tonnage ships for reduced loading, after a period of investment and upgrading, Quy Nhon Port Joint Stock Company has also completed and put into use wharf No. 1 with a length of 480m. This is considered an advantage for receiving ships with large tonnage and length, in line with the current trend of chartering ships. There are advantages and efficiency in receiving large ships with reduced load entering and exiting the port for cargo handling. However, in the Project on Research to Improve the Capacity to Exploit Public Maritime Infrastructure and Existing Port Infrastructure submitted by the Vietnam Maritime Administration to the Ministry of Transport, Quy Nhon waterway has not been maintained or dredged for a long time because it is not possible to find a location to dump dredged material. At the same time, dredging and maintenance projects for water areas in front of the port in the area have not been dredged for many years to ensure the design depth because it is not possible to find a location to dump dredged material. Meanwhile, if dredged and upgraded, Quy Nhon Port is qualified to receive ships with a tonnage of up to 70,000 DWT with reduced load to handle cargo. According to Giao Thong Newspaper, the Ministry of Transport has currently approved the Project on investment in construction of the Quy Nhon waterway renovation and upgrade for ships of 50,000 DWT. The project is invested by the Maritime Project Management Board, with a total investment of nearly 700 billion VND from the state budget in the medium-term public investment plan for the period 2021 - 2025. The project investment scale includes a channel with a length of about 7,160 m from buoy No. 0 to the turning basin of wharf No. 1; channel width of 140 m; channel bottom elevation - 13 m (Naval chart) for ships with a capacity of up to 50,000 DWT (full load) or larger (ensuring maritime safety conditions); Upgrading the existing turning basin in front of wharf No. 1 into a shared turning basin with a diameter of 400 m to receive ships with a capacity of up to 50,000 DWT. The project also widens the curved channel with a diameter of 220m - 235m, moving the buoy signaling system to match the upgraded channel. Ship size designed for ships up to 50,000 DWT.Traffic Newspaper
